Delighted to share that, after a long old four years, I successfully defended my thesis last Friday! The time in Lancaster continues (for now at least), cracking on with work on PUFs, but feels good to close a chapter* on the PhD.
*got corrections to do ofc
I took part remotely in the 2021 school, & would recommend this opportunity to any student with an interest in quantum tech. Informative lectures and a great platform for interdisciplinary research in the field. I’ll just be jealous of all those who get to attend in person 😢
Applications are now open for the 2023 Los Alamos Quantum Computing Summer School! Our school focuses on theory, applications, and programming of quantum computers. Apply here: https://t.co/Jg0O29Bf2S
Incredible example of how just chucking machine learning at something doesn’t automatically mean good research. A tool that considers calling a politician a liar a form of toxic abuse, but lacks the capacity to label clearly racist language as such, is not a well thought out tool
Excited to have this pre-print up! Mixed state compilation, allowing for the learning of an unknown mixed state and it’s principal components, either at full scale, or for (lower-rank) compressed approximations. Click through for Nic’s great summary, and ofc, the paper itself.
Myself, @AcademiBall @AlizaSi61960382 @markwilde@sornborg @ColesQuantum @qZoeHolmes have developed a new NISQ friendly algorithm to compile a potentially unknown quantum state into a parameterized quantum circuit.

@MarkelaZeneli but there’s no clear indication that this is actually true. This is ofc not to mention that there are obviously areas of our knowledge that aren’t easily compatible with others.
@MarkelaZeneli Maybe simplifying things by my interests, but my take is that it boils down to ontology vs epistemology. That so much of what we observe follows the rules we’ve found (seems to have) lead them to believe it means these laws describe the true reality of the universe,
End of an era as my last ever @URY1350 show is done. Thanks to all who listened, and thanks to all who shared music, glad we got to listen to the most beautiful songs in the world together.
Also had some of our work at Lancaster published recently! Looking at long-term use of #QuantumDots as physical unclonable functions via fingerprint extraction! https://t.co/BzQOQzGg5G #QuantumSecurity
The issue is really the failure to adopt institutional mechanisms, flexibility and resources to nurture a generation of young black scholars who can make it up to the professoriate. You raise the matter, & you'll get an earful about 'colour-blind' 'merit'.
@MarkelaZeneli I hope so too. Most likely just a case of throwing it all together last minute and not editing properly. Can’t see why any areas in which SHA-2 or 3 is already in use would revert to SHA-1 just because of this, so hopefully it won’t practically make any difference. Still stupid.
Hey! I interviewed the incredibly interesting @AlastairShuttl1 of the absolutely astounding @licebristol for this magazine. I promise the interview isn’t full of such awful alliteration as this tweet.
@PhDVoice Always varies with field, department, country, but generally... it’s fine. Idk many people who were published before applying for PhD courses. And I know people who graduate with very few, if any, publications.
