🌍 The Final Consortium Meeting of the @AccelWater project took place from 1–4 April 2025, across Patras and Athens, marking the successful conclusion of a project that promotes circular economy practices in the food & beverage sector.

💧 Technical sessions for the project’s progress, collaborative workshops (in partnership with @BOOSTIN_eu), field visits to the Industrial Symbiosis Demonstrator (@AthenianBrewery, @FrieslndCampina Hellas, @RezosEuRnD), and a Final Dissemination Event at @Beyondexpo1 2025 showcased the impact of AccelWater’s innovations.

🌍 💧 The EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive is getting a major upgrade!
Here’s what’s changing:
✅ Broader coverage – Smaller towns must now comply.
✅ Advanced treatment by 2045 – Cities must upgrade wastewater plants.
✅ Stricter pollution control – More nutrients, PFAS, and microplastics must be removed.
✅ New public health measures – Wastewater will be monitored for antimicrobial resistance & viruses (e.g., SARS-CoV-2) to detect health risks early.
✅ Biggest polluters pay – Pharmaceutical & cosmetic industries must cover at least 80% of the cost to remove micropollutants, reducing the burden on taxpayers.
✅ Energy & climate neutrality – The sector must reach net-zero emissions by 2040.
✅ Stormwater management – Cities must create flood & pollution prevention plans.
✅ Circular economy boost – Wastewater will be used to recover valuable materials like phosphorus for reuse in agriculture.
✅ Improved sanitation access – Member States must ensure public facilities for vulnerable communities by 2029.
💊🧴 However, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries come with a counterargument claiming that the directive unfairly singles them out, despite pollution coming from multiple sources. They argue that the financial burden could raise product costs for consumers and that new technologies, not extra taxes, should be the focus.
