UNAIDS applauds Botswana on fully repealing anti-LGBTQ+ law
More than six years after Botswana’s courts struck down a ban on same-sex intimacy, the government has now formally removed the discriminatory provisions from the law.
UNAIDS statement below: https://t.co/mZnddd1cKd…
Visibility itself is advocacy but also increases risk, returning to grassroots organising and mutual support to withstand anti-rights movements is important. Teaching intersectionality and diversity from primary school to reduce discrimination systemically was proposed
criminalisation enables state control and surveillance, widespread impunity and varied impacts across identities. Donor funding changes have eroded services and trust, driving communities underground and worsening stigma and access to care @kingndondo
Criminalisation prevents trans & intersex people from obtaining IDs and thus limits access to employment, housing & healthcare. Providers & justice systems frequently discriminate & rarely prosecute abuses against gender-diverse people, leaving victims without recourse.
local, context-specific advocacy and legal recognition of organisations is important; such efforts must consider trade-offs, ensure long-term support and wellness for activists, and include work to queer health systems so marginalised people can access equitable services;
Reproductive justice should replace narrow “choice” narratives with a people-centered, holistic approach that addresses lived realities, tailors comprehensive services to the most marginalised, and uses solidarity and collective advocacy to scale interventions regionally-webinar
Criminalisation acts as systematic, gendered social control that restricts access to info, education, reproductive and gender-affirming care, increases policing and violence against marginalised groups, and produces cascading social and economic harms that undermine autonomy.

Following the launch of the Global AIDS Strategy 2026-2031, @gnpplus is mobilizing PLHIV leaders ahead of the UN High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS in June 2026.
This #HLM2026 will gather UN member states to define global commitments that directly shape HIV programmes at country level. The voices of people living with HIV must be central to the process.
@gnpplus is therefore convening PLHIV leaders and HIV networks for the next STRATEGY TO ACTION webinar focused on #UNHLM2026.
Together, we will define a unified PLHIV position and coordinate advocacy for a stronger 2026 Political Declaration that delivers a sustainable HIV response beyond 2030.

65 countries criminalise private, same-sex, consensual sexual activity.
This #WorldHealthDay, we're highlighting how criminalisation brings stigma and shame and hinders the availability, access and uptake of HIV prevention, testing and treatment services for LGBT people.
