The new NYSC reform solves very little of the scheme’s core problems.
Corps members already endure overcrowded camps with poor sanitation, inadequate feeding, and security risks. Extending orientation to 6 weeks without guaranteed upgrades in infrastructure, healthcare, and welfare simply prolongs the hardship.
All that talk about State govt are expected to do this or that will simply not happen this is Nigeria.
Also the 2-week phases for skills training are too short for any tangible, employer-recognised competence; you cannot meaningfully certify someone in tech, agriculture, or enterprise in such limited time.
Simply put no employer is going to think you have value because of NYSC 2 weeks training.
Nigeria’s youth challenge isn’t primarily a lack of learning during service. Graduates already possess degrees. The real issue here is financing-access to capital, startup grants, or affordable loans to turn ideas into businesses.
Without micro-finance links, stipends that actually support ventures, or post-service entrepreneurship pipelines, the streams risk becoming another checkbox exercise.
Lastly, I think we solve our problems in reverse order instead of asking people suffering what they need someone who is far out of touch sits somewhere and make a decision for them.
Public consultation and ground-level up fixes should have come first.
i had seen beauty in a thousand forms before:
the patient dignity of mountains after rain,
the moon suspended over sleeping roofs,
the mercy hidden in the breaking of a day.
yet beauty always seemed a passing guest,
arriving softly, then departing without trace;
until I met a wonder that remained,
and taught my heart the meaning of its stay.
i searched for language vast enough to hold
the gratitude your presence has inspired,
and finding every metaphor too small,
could only say: you are the love of my life.
for since that day, each joy has worn your shadow,
each hope has carried something of your name;
the dreams I nurture, and the prayers I make for us,
have woven you into the fabric of my days.
so take this truth, however poor the words:
everything i have, and everything i am, is yours. forever.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) — 9th of Muharram
Thursday — 10th of Muharram (Yawmul ‘Āshūrā')
Friday — 11th of Muharram
If you cannot fast on Wednesday and Thursday, then endeavour to fast on Thursday and Friday instead.
Do your best not to miss the fast of ‘Āshūrā. May Allāh accept it from us all.
