Do you feel the world is broken?
(We do)
Do you feel the shadows deepen?
(We do)
But do you know that all the dark won't
Stop the light from getting through?
(We do)
Do you wish that you could see it all made new?
We do)
At the start of my sermon I offered this humility inventory.
These questions help me examine the ways I submit to, or resist being formed in the way of Jesus.
Eventually you guys are going to run out of litmus tests for ecclesial faithfulness.
Does the church preach the gospel, celebrate the ordinances, live missionally?
It’s normal to disagree, but not all disagreements need to be raised to the level of fidelity.
Just chill.
A church member recently asked me, “What’s the hardest part about being a pastor?”
My answer:
Walking with people through a major life issue only for them to leave the church at some point over something petty, often without ever talking to you.

Want to change your worship experience at church?
Pray before you get there. Ask God to speak to you.
Listen to worship music on the way.
Take a Bible with you, instead of relying on the screens.
Don’t run late.
Sing loudly like you mean it.
Take notes.
Expect God to move.
The next time you get to teach me I was wrong, I hope you look into my eyes and see gratitude, not fear.
Curiosity is life-giving in a way that criticism and defensiveness are not.
'm wrong sometimes, and I don't like it.
Who likes being wrong?
But I'm learning to delight in finding out I am wrong because at that moment I become less wrong than I was.
Who wants to hold on to incorrect beliefs or false knowledge?
Finding out I'm wrong brings the joy of releasing something false so I can take hold of something true.
The people around me should never pay a price for giving me this gift.
This is the kind of person I want to be.

Saying no is not letting others down. It’s standing up for yourself.
Setting boundaries isn't a display of disrespect. It’s an expression of self-respect.
Other people can't set your limits. They have the right to make requests, but self-preservation is your responsibility.

Prayer is not about throwing holy words at God to see what sticks; it is rather entrance to a new way of seeing reality, the opening of ourselves to God’s presence, and an act that trains us in love.
In Gen 3, after Adam sins, God’s 1st question is “where are you?”
In Gen 4 after Cain sins, God’s 1st question is, “where is your brother?”
The core of our relationship with God is found in these two questions.

The good news is that if you want to blame someone else for all of your problems, you'll never run out of places to point your finger. Parents, teachers, friends, politicians, the list is endless.
The bad news is that you will run out of time to actually change your life.
Pray for Afghanistan & Haiti. Take that angst, grief, concern, bafflement & indignation to the feet of Jesus & let them tumble forth in pleas for mercy, action & leadership, knowing the Spirit intercedes according to God’s will. Just show up at the throne and groan.
But show up.
“Community is the place where the people you least want to be with are always there.” (Nouwen)
This is the beauty of church. We all have these people, and we all *are* these people to somebody else. And yet, we are all loved by and united with Jesus.
See you in church?
