Russell Metty's cinematography swings Welles' vision of Touch of Evil through our sense of flow- it's mesmerizing. But I think about the first real words we hear: "Hot on the trail of a chocolate soda for my wife..."
Welles conflates food with sex almost immediately. His writing in conjunction with his original sense of editing (Walter Murch rescuing the edits from Welles' notes) where food and love intertwine through a morality tale of excess' relationship to discipline. I think what makes the film so beautiful is it's vulgar discipline. Everything just "hangs out" while the commitment to craft moves the vision forward. The delicate balance of a genius literally bursting at the seems.
