LASTMA APPREHENDS DRIVER OF HEAVILY-LOADED BUCKET TRUCK FOLLOWING THE TRAGIC DEATHS OF AN INNOCENT PEDESTRIAN AND A MOTORCYCLIST ALONG THE BADAGRY EXPRESSWAY.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority over the weekend confirmed the occurrence of a devastating fatal road traffic incident involving a heavily-loaded bucket truck which tragically claimed the lives of an innocent pedestrian and a motorcyclist along the Iyana-Iba Flyover inward the main gate of Lagos State University on the main carriageway of the Badagry Expressway.

Preliminary security findings revealed that the fully-loaded bucket truck was reportedly travelling on a top speed from Volkswagen inward Badagry when the driver fatally knocked down an innocent pedestrian. Rather than bringing the vehicle to an immediate halt after the initial impact, the truck driver recklessly continued his movement along the corridor.

In a courageous yet tragic attempt to intercept the fleeing vehicle, a motorcyclist, accompanied by another sympathizer, pursued the truck with the intention of compelling the driver to stop and face the consequences of his actions. However, in a shocking turn of events, the truck driver rammed violently into the motorcycle during the pursuit, resulting in the instantaneous death of the motorcyclist, while the accompanying sympathizer miraculously escaped unhurt.

Operatives of the LASTMA Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team, who were strategically deployed along the Badagry Expressway corridor for routine all-night traffic monitoring and emergency response operations, swiftly arrived at the scene and undertook the painstaking evacuation of the deceased motorcyclist whose body had become trapped beneath the front wheel tyre of the bucket truck.

The truck driver was immediately apprehended by vigilant LASTMA officials and subsequently handed over to security operatives attached to the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps Accident and Emergency Response Team for further investigation and necessary legal procedures.

While the remains of the deceased motorcyclist were evacuated by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the corpse of the innocent pedestrian earlier killed by the truck was respectfully handed over to his grieving relatives who later arrived at the accident scene after being duly informed of the unfortunate tragedy.

Furthermore, both the loaded bucket truck and the severely damaged motorcycle involved in the incident were evacuated to the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, pending the conclusion of comprehensive investigations into the catastrophic occurrence.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed profound grief and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of the two deceased victims.

He described the unfortunate incident as a painful reminder of the grave consequences of reckless driving, particularly amongst articulated vehicle operators and truck drivers who frequently disregard established traffic regulations and safety protocols on major highways.

Mr. Bakare-Oki therefore sternly admonished truck drivers and other road users to always comply strictly with regulated speed limits and exercise utmost caution, both during daytime and nocturnal operations, in order to avert needless loss of innocent lives on Lagos roads.

The General Manager further reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of LASTMA towards sustaining aggressive surveillance, traffic enforcement, emergency rescue interventions and collaborative engagements with relevant security and safety agencies to enhance road safety across the State.

ONE FATALITY, FOUR OTHERS RESCUED AS BRAKE MALFUNCTION PROVOKES DEVASTATING COLLISION AT EKORO JUNCTION, ABULE-EGBA; LASTMA ACTIVATES EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROTOCOL.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has formally confirmed a harrowing road traffic catastrophe that transpired this evening at approximately 19:30 hours at Ekoro Junction inward Abule-Egba, culminating in one fatality while four other individuals were successfully rescued with minor injuries following a catastrophic mechanical failure.

An empty MACK tanker experienced a sudden and critical brake malfunction resulting in an abrupt loss of vehicular control and violently rammed into a Toyota Corolla before careening uncontrollably into a nearby roadside shop. The ferocity of the impact occasioned extensive structural devastation and generated palpable panic among pedestrians, traders and adjoining business operators within the corridor.

The tanker (EKY 900 XY) collided with a Toyota Corolla (AAA 823 AY). The magnitude of the collision led to the immediate confirmation of one fatality at the scene, while four other trapped persons were extricated from the wreckage through coordinated emergency rescue efforts.

In a prompt and coordinated intervention, LASTMA activated its Rescue and Recovery protocol, deploying specialised operatives to the incident location to initiate comprehensive emergency response measures. Personnel implemented strategic traffic diversion, vehicular evacuation procedures and crowd management in synergy with other emergency responders to forestall secondary incidents and guarantee unobstructed access for rescue operations.

Emergency teams undertook painstaking extraction procedures, successfully rescuing all trapped victims while facilitating immediate medical attention for affected individuals. To accelerate clearance operations, LASTMA mobilised a heavy-duty tow truck to evacuate the damaged tanker and remove debris obstructing vehicular movement along the axis.

The tanker driver reportedly absconded from the scene immediately after the occurrence an act unequivocally condemned by authorities. Security operatives have commenced coordinated efforts to apprehend the fleeing driver and ensure the initiation of appropriate legal proceedings.
Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Ekoro Division, responded expeditiously, maintaining public order, securing the accident perimeter and assisting in investigative processes aimed at establishing the precise sequence of events that culminated in the mechanical failure and subsequent collision.

The incident precipitated considerable traffic congestion extending across adjoining routes toward Abule-Egba, necessitating robust traffic management interventions by LASTMA officials who remained on ground directing vehicular movement and implementing diversion strategies to alleviate the backlog.

While conveying profound condolences to the bereaved family, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the imperative for transport operators particularly articulated vehicle drivers to prioritise routine mechanical inspections with heightened emphasis on braking systems, noting that preventable mechanical deficiencies remain a significant contributory factor in severe road traffic crashes.

Bakare-Oki further admonished motorists to exercise heightened vigilance, comply strictly with traffic regulations and sustain responsible driving practices, especially within densely populated commercial corridors where mechanical failures often yield catastrophic consequences.

LASTMA INTERCEPTS FLEEING TRUCK DRIVER AFTER DEADLY IMPACT KILLS CYCLIST UNDER LASUTH BRIDGE, IKEJA

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has formally confirmed a heart-rending and fatal road traffic occurrence beneath the LASUTH Bridge at the traffic signal corridor inward Airport Road, Ikeja, involving a DAF articulated truck and an unsuspecting cyclist.

Preliminary security findings reveal that the tragic episode unfolded as both the cyclist and the heavy-duty truck advancing from the Maryland axis, simultaneously attempted to negotiate the roundabout underneath the bridge.

In the course of this perilous convergence, the cyclist was reportedly unable to maintain a safe clearance from the moving truck. Within a matter of moments, the situation escalated disastrously, resulting in the cyclist being violently crushed and succumbing to fatal injuries on the spot.

LASTMA operatives who were actively deployed to regulate and control vehicular movement at the location responded with exemplary alacrity. Their prompt and decisive action culminated in the immediate apprehension of the truck driver, who had attempted to abscond from the scene to evade culpability. The suspect was thereafter handed over to security personnel from the Ikeja Police Division for thorough investigation and prosecution in line with extant laws.

In order to avert secondary accidents and swiftly restore traffic normalcy, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) were urgently summoned to evacuate the remains of the deceased cyclist from the carriageway, thereby ensuring public safety and operational orderliness at the scene.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed deep sorrow over the needless and irreplaceable loss of life, while extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

He offered prayers that Almighty God grants the family the fortitude, resilience and divine comfort required to endure the profound grief occasioned by the tragedy.

Hon. Giwa further utilized the sombre moment to issue a firm caution to cyclists and commercial motorbike riders, admonishing them to exercise heightened circumspection and to place utmost priority on their personal safety while navigating Lagos roads.

He reiterated that cyclists must strictly comply with traffic regulations and refrain from plying expressways, highways, and other major arterial routes where their exposure to danger is considerably amplified.

According to him, “The Lagos State Government has over time, sustained intensive sensitisation initiatives through public jingles and documentary campaigns aimed at enlightening cyclists and other vulnerable road users on the necessity of confining their movements to inner roads, away from highways and high-risk corridors. This safety directive equally applies to skateboard users and other non-motorized conveyances.”

The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, once again reaffirms its unwavering commitment to rigorous road safety enforcement, sustained public enlightenment and the protection of all categories of road users, while urging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to conduct themselves responsibly and strictly within the confines of traffic laws in order to forestall avoidable tragedies.

The monthly "Walk for Fitness" exercise, organized by the Head of Service (HOS) Mr Bode Agoro, has commenced for the year 2026.

On January 31st, 2026, a large number of participants from various Ministries and Agencies in the State including some Permanent Secretaries gathered for the exercise, which started at the usual venue, Alausa Secretariat (Adeyemi Bero Premises). The walk route traversed Obafemi Awolowo Way towards Allen/Ikeja.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) not only effectively managed traffic along the route but also actively participated in the exercise, demonstrating their commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle and supporting community initiatives.
The exercise saw a massive turnout, showcasing the enthusiasm and dedication of Lagos State employees to fitness and wellness.

In an eloquent affirmation of compassion, institutional appreciation and an unwavering resolve to immortalise sacrifice, the Lagos State Government has disbursed a cumulative sum of ₦40 million as consolatory assistance to the families and dependants of departed officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), gallant heroes and heroines who laid down their lives in the faithful discharge of duty.

The solemn yet impactful presentation, meticulously coordinated by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa was held today at the LASTMA Headquarters, Oshodi, Lagos. At the ceremony, 20 families and dependants were each presented with the sum of ₦2 million as a demonstration of the State Government’s enduring solidarity and concern.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Giwa cautioned against interpreting the gesture as compensation for loss, emphasising that no financial consideration can ever approximate the sanctity, worth and irreplaceability of human life.

He explained that the support represents a symbolic and tangible acknowledgment of the exceptional gallantry, steadfast devotion to duty, uncommon courage in the face of danger and ultimate sacrifice rendered by the fallen officers in service to Lagos State and humanity at large.

“The Lagos State Government remains resolute in its determination to perpetuate the memory of these valiant men and women. This intervention stands as a clear testament that their sacrifices were neither unnoticed nor unappreciated and that their families will never be left to bear the burden of loss alone,” Hon. LASTMA, LAGOS FIRE SERVICE PROMPTLY THWART IMPENDING INFERNO FOLLOWING DIESEL TANKER MISHAP ON LIVERPOOL BRIDGE, MILE 2 CORRIDOR, APAPA.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in exemplary synergy with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has once again underscored its operational acuity and institutional readiness by decisively forestalling a potentially calamitous fire outbreak on the Liverpool Bridge inward Mile 2, occasioned by a tanker-related incident.

Preliminary security findings indicate that an articulated Iveco tanker (RBC 98 XX), heavily laden with diesel lost vehicular control and toppled onto the bridge, resulting in significant structural impairment to the tanker and the uncontrolled discharge of large volumes of diesel across the carriageway.
Of grave concern was the spillage of the highly combustible petroleum product from the elevated bridge to the area beneath an occurrence that regrettably drew the attention of some unscrupulous individuals who attempted to scoop the diesel, thereby compounding the volatility and danger inherent in the situation.

Upon receipt of the emergency alert, LASTMA operatives immediately mobilised to the scene exhibiting remarkable professionalism, vigilance and composure. The Agency’s personnel promptly dispersed the crowd engaged in the hazardous act of scooping diesel decisively cordoned off the affected area and swiftly activated established inter-agency emergency response mechanisms by notifying security operatives and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

This resolute and timely intervention effectively neutralised the imminent threat of combustion and prevented what could have escalated into a devastating inferno with dire human, environmental and infrastructural ramifications.

The driver of the distressed tanker, who sustained severe injuries in the course of the accident was courageously rescued by LASTMA officials and urgently conveyed to the General Hospital, Apapa, where he is currently receiving comprehensive medical attention.

To ensure maximum safety, orderliness and situational control at the scene, officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Area ‘B’ Police Division, Apapa provided robust security reinforcement, working in close collaboration with other emergency responders to maintain crowd control, regulate traffic flow and stabilise the environment.

In the meantime, an alternative empty tanker was promptly deployed to facilitate the transloading of the remaining diesel, while vehicular movement was tactically diverted by LASTMA to the opposite carriageway in the interest of public safety and to guarantee the seamless flow of traffic.

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa praised the swift response, tactical efficiency and high-level coordination displayed by LASTMA personnel and other emergency responders, noting that their collective professionalism averted what could have culminated in another tragic fire disaster.

Looking ahead, Hon. Giwa assured the motoring public that LASTMA is strategically poised to transition decisively from conventional traffic regulation to an advanced, technology-driven incident management framework in the new year.

He revealed that this transformation will be powered by the deployment of cutting-edge technological solutions, real-time surveillance and monitoring systems, rapid-response mechanisms and data-driven operational models designed to minimise road incidents, compress response times and significantly enhance overall road safety.

“In 2026, LASTMA will move beyond routine traffic control to proactively manage road incidents. Technology will constitute the nucleus of our operations anticipating disruptions, facilitating swift emergency responses and ensuring that Lagos roads remain safer, smarter and more efficient for all categories of road users,” he assured.

Hon. Giwa concluded by urging Lagosians to sustain the prevailing culture of compliance, patience and mutual respect on the roads, emphasising that effective traffic management is a shared civic responsibility between government institutions and the citizenry.

LASTMA HONOURS OFFICER OLATUNFE OLUWOLE JOHN WITH PRESTIGIOUS MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR EXEMPLARY HUMANITY AND UNMATCHED PROFESSIONAL DEDICATION.

The Management and entire workforce of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) today assembled in an atmosphere of dignified pride and collective admiration to celebrate Mr. Olatunfe Oluwole John, a Senior Traffic Officer attached to Zone 20 (PWD, Lagos), who has been fittingly crowned “LASTMA Man of the Year 2025” in recognition of his conspicuous gallantry, profound compassion and rare devotion to duty.

Speaking during the celebratory ceremony, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed that the honour was conferred following the officer’s extraordinary exhibition of empathy, professionalism and lifesaving intervention while carrying out his statutory responsibilities along the BRT corridor by PWD on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.

According to the General Manager, Officer Olatunfe distinguished himself by courageously assuming the critical role of a first responder during a harrowing road traffic incident involving a commercial scooter rider and a female pedestrian, who reportedly went into severe convulsions immediately after the impact.

“His unwavering dedication to duty, humane disposition and prompt, effective service delivery have not gone unnoticed. His selfless intervention elicited widespread public commendation and attracted resounding accolades across various social media platforms,” Mr. Bakare-Oki stated.

Recounting the incident, it was recalled that upon witnessing the accident, Officer Olatunfe reacted with remarkable alacrity, administering immediate first aid to the distressed victim in a bid to stabilise her condition.

He further exemplified exceptional initiative by securing a tricycle to convey both the injured woman and the scooter rider to Mayfair Hospital, Agege, where he remained resolutely by her side. In a rare and deeply moving demonstration of compassion that transcended the call of official duty, the officer reportedly prayed fervently for the victim’s recovery while ensuring she received urgent medical attention.

Unaware that his altruistic actions were being documented, an onlooker recorded the episode and shared the footage on social media, where it gained considerable traction and ultimately drew the attention of the LASTMA General Manager.

Further underscoring his integrity and profound sense of responsibility, Officer Olatunfe was said to have utilised the victim’s mobile phone to contact her family members, ensuring that her father and siblings were promptly notified and present at the hospital before he responsibly returned to his duty post.

He equally ensured accountability by compelling the scooter rider to assume full responsibility for the incident, including the settlement of all medical expenses incurred during the victim’s treatment.

In acknowledgement of this extraordinary conduct, the Management of LASTMA not only issued a formal letter of commendation but also promoted Officer Olatunfe from his former role as a Choke Point Officer to the position of 2nd Bravo, Zone 20, in addition to the presentation of a cash reward.

Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasised that the recognition and promotion were deliberately instituted to reinforce the Authority’s core values and to motivate other officers to emulate such exemplary conduct.

“This honour is designed to send an unequivocal message across the Agency that excellence, integrity, compassion and outstanding service delivery will always be recognised and rewarded. LASTMA CONDEMNS EGREGIOUS ONE-WAY DRIVING AS DELIVERY MOTORCYCLIST SUFFERS A GRAVE LIMB FRACTURE IN A SERIOUS COLLISION ON ODO IYA-ALARO BRIDGE, MARYLAND, LAGOS.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has registered deep consternation over a harrowing traffic incident that unfolded in the early hours of today on the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge inward Maryland along the Ikorodu Road corridor, resulting in a grievous limb fracture sustained by a delivery motorcyclist.

Preliminary security investigations at the scene revealed that the unfortunate occurrence was catalyzed by the residual disruptions following a truck inferno earlier in the morning at the same location. The aftermath of the fire incident had engendered a severe slow traffic impasse along the entire Ikorodu Road axis.

Amid the protracted slow vehicular movements, a private ambulance (BED 508 EA) conveying a pregnant woman dependent on oxygen support recklessly elected to traverse against traffic (one-way) at an imprudent and perilous speed. This dangerous manoeuvre culminated in a forceful collision with a delivery motorcyclist legitimately navigating his designated lane, instantly inflicting a grave and excruciating fracture to his right knee.

In an expeditious and meticulously coordinated emergency intervention, LASTMA Officers alerted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), which promptly deployed two ambulances to the scene. The pregnant woman, along with her life-support apparatus, was safely transloaded into one LASAMBUS ambulance, while the second conveyed the severely injured motorcyclist to the nearest medical facility for immediate treatment.

The driver of the private ambulance was apprehended on-site by LASTMA Officials and subsequently handed over to operatives of the Ogudu Police Division for comprehensive interrogation and potential prosecution in accordance with extant laws.

LASTMA personnel further effected the safe removal of both the accident-damaged ambulance and the wrecked delivery motorcycle, thereafter transferring the vehicles to the Ogudu Police Division. Throughout the rescue effort, police operatives provided sustained security reinforcement, ensuring seamless emergency operations and the preservation of vital evidentiary material.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reaffirmed the Agency’s uncompromising zero-tolerance posture towards the dangerous and unlawful act of driving against traffic.

He urged ambulance operators and all emergency service drivers to adhere strictly to safety protocols, particularly when conveying medically fragile patients, so as to avert avoidable tragedies on Lagos roads.

Mr. Bakare-Oki conveyed his sincere wishes for a rapid and complete recuperation to both the injured motorcyclist and the expectant mother, emphasizing LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to its statutory mandate of protecting lives and restoring order and civility across all transportation corridors within Lagos State.
