The first time a babe told me she couldn't date me because she found out i was the first born, I was hurt like mad.

At first, I thought she was just looking for an excuse.

But then she explained.

Omo, that one sha pain me. But wetin i go do na? Looking back at everything now, she was actually right.

Woke up with a heavy heart today. Stayed on my bed for over an hour just thinking deeply about how much life has changed in such a short time.

There was a time my leave allowance could comfortably sort my yearly rent, and I’d still have enough left to buy a few clothes, footwear, maybe even a jacket.

Now? The same money barely sorts anything substantial. The most painful part is watching the quality of life in this country decline so aggressively while people slowly normalize struggle like this is how life is supposed to be.

A lot of Nigerians are exhausted, financially stretched, and silently grieving the lives they used to be able to afford.

Agree or not, APC already ruined the country, set us in a poverty journey at a fast track pace and they are demanding another 4 years.

My space was too niche for the Nigerian market (in real life, it's not). If I lost my job, I would be stranded, because only very few employers understood what I do within an HR team, and had such roles within their structure. ++, enu ti fe. I go just hate my life.

How do I explain to an average company in Nigeria that my top skill set was akin to having an in-house OD & workforce analytics consultant, and so I deserve over 1.5 million in salaries?

One of the Big 4 invited me to interview. I told them what I was earning as an SBO in a bank (due for AM), and they disappeared. I was wondering what their plan was. That was when the fear really settled in.

Which, by the way, in my first month in France, I had been invited to three internship interviews in workforce planning (L'Oreal included), to work in the team responsible for designing their structures (cost centers with job roles and control systems), for the next 5 years. Did not pick any up because it was not internship season yet.

There is a ceiling for most roles here. I see CFOs and some CEOs in good organizations here who are just 55, and they have to retire there. Meanwhile, a Morgan Stanley could come and poach you at 55 from BoA to come and work for another 5 years. And when you are done, a payments startup can poach you to help them go to market and grow because they can afford you, even if it's for three years.

Meanwhile, do you know that by 35, a very skilled and experienced individual living in a developed economy with 15+ years of experience would have been poached (or moved jobs with vertical & horizontal progression) at least 7 times within that period (assuming they accept all the offers).

Anyways, it's too early to start this conversation.
