I actually don’t think we are okay. We are absolutely not. Because this is obviously what the MDCN wants. Instead of us to try to fight this thing, you’re telling us to write primaries. If not that you’re my chief, I would have said you should get out, with your winter boots
If not that we have deeply foolish and unwise individuals as lawmakers, how can you sit down and try to rationalize prison time for attempted suicide? What exactly is that supposed to do? Why are we cursed in this country? Please why???
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CHIEF OF STAFF TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA
A Call for the Inclusion of Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman @mohagirei in National Health Policy Leadership
Dear Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila @femigbaja ,
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chief of Staff to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,
I bring you respectful greetings from the medical community.
I write with a humble but urgent request. The immediate past President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman (popularly known as P-MUS), has demonstrated exceptional leadership in the discharge of his duties. As I write this letter, he is widely regarded as one of the most respected figures among healthcare workers nationwide. Across professions and cadres, colleagues in the health sector felt his impact, directly or indirectly.
He achieved far more than is usually expected of a position that had too often been treated as ceremonial. Among his notable achievements are:
The successful advocacy that led to the reinstatement of the wrongly dismissed doctors at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja (the Lokoja 5+2).
The nationwide payment of long-outstanding 2024 accoutrement allowances and the 25%/35% CONMESS review arrears.
The release and commencement of implementation of the corrected Professional Allowance Table (PAT), restoring fairness in doctors’ remuneration.
Decisive engagement on career-progression injustices, including entry-level downgrading, bottlenecks in upgrade, and the specialist allowance, together with advocacy for a 24-hour limit on call duty.
Institutional strengthening of NARD through townhall forums, a welfare scheme, a cooperative society, a printing press and other sustainability ventures, while also reducing the association’s annual operating budget by nearly ₦200 million.
These and other interventions transformed agitation into measurable results and earned him the trust of resident doctors and the wider health workforce.
In the light of the foregoing, I plead, on behalf of the teeming population of Nigerian health workers, especially resident doctors, that Dr. Suleiman be given a seat where health policies are made. He has proven worthy of higher responsibility. With him at the table, the thoughts and demands of frontline healthcare workers will be clearly represented and given adequate attention. The government, in turn, will be better placed to record the performance the nation desires and deserves.
Politically, P-MUS is already a significant national asset. He has earned the trust of many across the country. Honourable Sir, I believe you have interacted with him on one or two occasions. Given your well-known ability to recognise talent and character, I am confident you have already spotted him. This letter is simply a reminder and a call to action.
Respectfully submitted.
Yours faithfully,
Dr. Hasumi Okpanachi

This month makes it 14 years since I became a doctor. The journey took me 10yrs-5yrs Human Anatomy at Uniport and 5yrs Medical school at Calabar.
I spent 11 years practicing and training in England and the last 2 years thriving in Canada.
I’ve been lucky to have 2nd chances and have remained focused on building a reputable & robust career in Medicine.
So, when I speak to my
Mentees and younger doctors, I let them know I’ve walked their path and it’s just delayed gratification , grit & a sprinkle of luck or God’s favour that keep you on the path to success.
So, If you try & don’t succeed, dust yourself up & try again. Tough times don’t last , only tough people do. Your dream is valid!
