In September 2005, at Joe T. Robinson High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, social studies teacher Martha Cothren removed all desks from her classroom on the first day—with approval from the principal and superintendent.
Students arrived confused and asked where their desks were. Cothren replied they couldn’t sit until they explained how they had earned the right.
No one could answer. Parents called in alarm; some labelled her “crazy.” News crews showed up.
In the final period, Cothren opened the door. Twenty-seven U.S. veterans in uniform entered, each carrying a desk. They placed them in rows and stood at attention.Cothren’s lesson: “You didn’t earn these desks. These heroes did—through their service and sacrifice. That’s how freedom is paid for.”
The powerful message stayed with her students.
(The story is true and was later shared by then-Gov. Mike Huckabee.)
