Met with the Council President of HDh. Makunudhoo, Auzam Adam. The people of Makunudhoo have genuine concerns. The water and sewerage project was almost complete in 2023, yet it still remains unfinished. The airport work has slowed, and the school’s multi-purpose hall is also pending.
Even with these delays, the council’s efforts are impressive. Their partnership with Soneva Namoona has introduced a proper modern waste-management system that turns waste into something useful. They have also set up a community centre and run programmes that teach students about environmental protection, recycling and reuse.
Makunudhoo is rich in marine life, especially manta sightings, and the council is helping children understand the importance of protecting that environment. As the westernmost island, Makunudhoo also continues to benefit from the RTL service established during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, which has made a real difference in connecting the community.
I call for the immediate and unconditional release of all arrested during last night’s protest. Reports indicate that two former MPs, a Councillor for Addu City and the President of Maafushi Council are among those arrested for exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly and protest.
Resorting to disproportionate force, cruel crowd dispersal methods and unlawful arrests are signs of a government rapidly descending into authoritarian rule.
Our children are the heart and hope of our nation. On this National Children’s Day, let’s reaffirm our duty to cherish, protect and nurture every child in the Maldives. Happy Children’s Day!
‼️🚨Breaking News (confirmed)
Saudi Embassy in Maldives @KSAembassyMV has officially requested @MMuizzu gov to clarify the identity of "His Royal Highness Prince Fahad Saud Alshalan of Saudi Arabia," that Muizzu met as they do not recognise this individual.
I condemn the use of disproportionate and excessive force by Police to break up the ongoing peaceful demonstrations by young people demanding accountability and justice for a case that has shocked the entire nation to its core.
The fact that authorities had to resort to heavy-handedness to dispel a largely peaceful protest by non-partisan youth is indication of the government’s bad faith in this matter.
The right to peaceful assembly, the equality of everyone before the law and the right to justice are fundamental aspects of our democracy. My solidarity lies firmly with the young protestors in their efforts to seek justice and hold the government to account.
My sincere thanks to @highriseint, for inviting me to the 6th Edition of Vacations Expo. The Expo is a very well-organized initiative by High Rise that will positively contribute to Maldivian tourism.
