William the Conqueror killed Harold II at Hastings on this day 1066. Of his Harrying of the North, one writer said: 'So terrible a famine fell upon the humble and defenceless people, that more than 100,000 Christian folk of both sexes, young and old alike, perished of hunger.'
#OTD 490 years ago 1536 the Pilgrimage of Grace began in East Yorkshire. The people of Beverley gathered on the Westwood to oppose the religious changes of Henry VIII in sympathy with a revolt in Lincolnshire which had begun (and fizzled out) a week before. @hull_libraries
Crusader armies
Notably - at full stretch - the Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem could raise a force of 20,000 troops.
This might not sound like much, but for comparison the German Empire could raise around 15,000.
Why was the kingdom able to raise much larger armies?

The @rnli are the best of us. Skilled and courageous volunteers who put themselves into harms way, at a moment's notice, to save those in distress at sea.
If you think people and institutions like that are the problem in our nation, then you need to give your head a wobble ⚓
Hull City condemns the abhorrent racist abuse directed towards our new signing Robinio Vaz on social media.
No individual should ever experience discriminatory abuse, and the club will provide Robinio with our full support.

@HullCityKits@bigbadwalks I take your point, but I never felt that way about the European/cup version of the 14/15 shirt, which did the same thing in amber. It's a daft rule, which necessitates the shirt looking sub-optimal from the back in some form or other I suppose!

I've just signed up to the Independent Historians Network. It's a new and growing body of, well, independent historians looking to connect outside of the usual academic sphere. Some meet-ups are being arranged in different cities so if this sounds of interest to you then join in!

@HullCityKits Any sign of the different backs the clubs announcement suggested the player shirts have? Looked the same as the replica at the Ferriby game.
There's something of a medieval coronation about this. The king who held the south has lost the support of his courtiers and the usurper will ride into London heralded as a saviour by the city.
I suggest northern France for Keir Starmer to recruit mercenaries and prime his heir who's sure to return with Macron's backing.
