@MarkBurridge1@porkys22 The sport is beyond a joke at the moment Mark. Unless a serious stand is taken by the trainers and owners (very little left) that are still in the sport. You won’t have anything left. GBGB a governing body are the ones sitting back and letting it die - Joke!
@devondogger Absolutely gutted for you Baz, truly am! I was so lucky to be a part of the journey with adopting the beautiful Jean. Also with my first ever racing greyhound Anna. Thanks for the great times mate I’ve love every minute of it! Head up high mate you done yourself & Harry proud!
I was speaking to a trainer recently about the “£10 a day” cost of owning a greyhound… and I’m sure you can all guess, it just doesn’t stack up.
When you actually break it down properly - wages, bills, correct staffing, good feed, everything above board - you’re talking £425+VAT a month per dog on a 40–50 dog kennel, just to make a modest profit… before the trainer even pays themselves.
And that’s not anyone getting rich, that’s just making it viable.
So why are people still being charged £10 a day?
Because if trainers charged what it actually costs, we’d all walk away overnight. And if owners were asked to pay the real number, they’d look at prize money and go “what’s the point?”
So the gap just gets swallowed. Trainers either absorb the cost or move toward trainer-owned models.
They keep fees low to keep owners in and end up working for next to nothing, juggling cash flow. That’s the reality.
What I can’t get my head around is people still paying £20k+ for dogs on top of that. Dogs getting quoted at £30k off the back of one good run in Ireland… where does that come back?
You’d need them to be a dual Cat 1 winner just to break even.
£20k in, £400+ a month out… and prize money nowhere near where it should be.
The whole thing only works because people love the game and hope it will change - not because the numbers make sense.
At some point something has to give. And we are seeing that with owners and trainers leaving, this will not stop.
This needs to change from the top - GBGB, ARC, SIS, betting companies… the ones taking money out of the sport need to start putting more back in.
GBGB leaders specifically, PLEASE take some notice. Grow a backbone. Look at what is happening to the sport and the lives of those within it.
Work for those that keep you in jobs, act ethically and with conviction. Stop saying “we can’t”.
I don’t think we are too late. There are still passionate owners and trainers that want to be here to see this work.
But if this carries on, there won’t be owners or trainers left to keep it going - and we certainly won’t be bringing any new ones in.
The sport will have killed itself off long before the antis ever could.
Great opportunity to add to a great kennel, dogs trained and cared for in a great small kennel. Perfect for any dogs that need that extra care! Give Barry a call 07597 443 870
