@migueldeicaza@Avodovnik@shanselman If I recall, the AV vendors sued, or at least threatened to, to keep their kernel access. Thus laying the groundwork for today's fuckup.
@bai0@philiprosedale I wonder how the world would look if organisations (including countries) were capped at say 25 million people.
It's enough to achieve scales of efficiency, but not big enough to allow global dominance.
@davidfowl A way to ensure immutable data being copied in memory as a byproduct of function calling produces a compile error (except perhaps with the 'new' keyword?).
@FreyaHolmer You're about halfway to building something I'd love to see.
A big list of all the transformations needed to convert between LH/RH and Y/Z up for: vectors, TRS matrices and quaternions.
It'd make porting libraries between engines so much easier.
YOU made this existential to your company by fucking around with old contracts, trying to going back on user agreements and immolating the foundational trust between yourself and your users. There is a big difference between raising prices and deceptive business practise
@iskra_9 @georgebsocial I had a look at this yesterday in another thread, the Q3 '23 filings was about +$40M cash-in-cash-out; with $1.6B cash in the bank.
@MattMirrorFish@gekido If I was to bet, it was "growth by acquisition" - the core business isn't growing fast enough, so you buy a bunch of other businesses and pretend it was organic, as long as it plays into a narrative like "our core product could be used this way", and group it together in reports.
@MattMirrorFish@gekido I actually think this might be not a bad idea. Realtime tends to follow offline about 5-7 years later. Having a team solving future problems isn't awful; it's expensive, but it can help future proof.
That wasn't the reason they bought it though.
If Unity didn't hear developers' screams - they'll probably hear them NOW due to coin flow tinkling less loud:
Azur, Voodoo, and other f2p game companies turn off Unity Ads in protest agains new per-install fees. (link in comments)

@MattMirrorFish Sadly I'm in agreement.
Unreal is very sexy; they've really improved their weak points in the past 5 years.
But open source is the future. It just might be a while before the tooling is up to par.
@slipster216 @AntonHand@dannyaroslavski Interest rates are a big variable though - if they're carrying so much debt, with that now at substantially higher rates, they could be projecting some problems down the road which they have to address.
@slipster216 @AntonHand@dannyaroslavski Looks like they've got about $1.6B of 'cash in hand' with positive net cash flow of about $40M/quarter as of Jun '23.
They do have some pretty big balance sheet losses - but cashflow is king; the losses are likely write-downs rather than real losses.
