America has a new favorite fat bear.
Overcoming a broken jaw and an injured paw, Bear 32, also known as ‘Chunk,’ was proclaimed the winner of this year’s “Fat Bear Week.”
In the week-long annual competition, viewers follow 12 bears via webcam as they gorge on salmon at Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve, and then vote for their favorite in an online bracket competition.
As salmon swim upstream to return to their native spawning grounds, the bears wait, catch and devour as many as they can to bulk up before their coming winter hibernation.
According to Katmai National Park ranger Sarah Bruce, an estimated 200,000 salmon made their way up the Brooks River in the park this year.
At the competition’s end, Chunk’s final weight was estimated to be around 1,200 pounds.

When you drive all the to Milwaukee from Madison to house sit and the second you start recording an interview a fighter jet flies overhead. Stop following me, Air Force. F-35s have interrupted me enough.
@LauraInMadtown Not 100% certain why they made the stop, but it all ended peacefully. They got a man out of the driver’s seat and a woman out of the passenger side. They were also very interested in a bicycle they pulled out of the trunk.
Fundraising news: @Tony4WI, who hasn't announced whether he'll seek a 3rd term, raised $757,215 over the first 6 months of '25.
4 years ago, he raised $5 million in the same period ahead of his successful reelection bid.
Evers had $2M in the bank to end June. Had $7M in '21.
@Lindwall9 I usually get at least four F-35s buzzing my house every day in Madison. If I'm outside on the phone, I have to pause the conversation until they all land, but they come in for landings right over my house. Lots of T-38s, F-16s, UH-60s and CH-47s too. The UH-60s shake my house.
