I read the Tony Blair essay last night. I thought it was a really clear articulation of the challenges faced not just by Britain, but the world. I found myself agreeing, strongly, with about 90% of it.
I am stunned by the response today. Now living in the US, I'm significantly less connected to the UK vibe, but I'm pretty astonished at the blinkers so many supposed political leaders force on themselves.
The main rebuttal seems to be that these global changes aren't as fun to talk about as traditional town hall politics. As Blair sets out, only utter irrelevance will come from this.
In the US, there are similar challenges, and too often politicians look to simplify the global situation. The difference is the private sector in the US is so vast, the scale and speed is so strong in these emerging markets, that it doesn't hold progress back.
The UK will never compete with the US or China on the AI revolution, but it is best placed to be a strong third. For the size of our economy, that should be seen as our number one pursuit.
To say, "Why are you talking about AI when you should be focussing on the NHS and the cost of living" shows a level of naivety that is crushing. If those voices lead the conversation in the UK, its future is bleak. It is the flat earth equivalent. Whether you like it or not, that is the reality. We can embrace it and reap the benefits for society, or ignore it and forever be a poor follower.
@fuckchrxs Totally agree. In any context, personal or on an app, ghosting wouldn’t be such a viable and necessary option if people got the hint a bit better. No reply is a reply.
@PlisskenPatriot The thing is we don’t. Of course, some do, but most don’t, you just don’t notice because you don’t realise they’re gay. What really confuses me is when straight guys do the voice. It’s quite unsettling. You just assume they’re gay and then it’s like, “This is FABULOUS wife…”
@muheediva01 One could argue that the increased value of the property, taxes, fees and interest rates are a major upgrade to the apartment in terms of its cost to own and therefore its value to rent.
Ever have one of those days where you're not sure if you're going through a phase of acute depression and anxiety, or it might just be extreme hay fever.
@fw_naetoblaq Read. It's fine if it's on the Kindle app. But is has to be an actual book, genre not important. All other lights off. You'll get to a point within 30 minutes where you find yourself re-reading paragraphs as you doze off. Do not under any circumstance check socials.
@reformparty_uk This quote is so distorted it is actionable. What she actually said has been shared widely on social media. This is disgusting. I thought you were attempting to be a proper party.
Fucking amateur.
Do better.
This is a horrible case, it’s heart breaking and his family need to be first in everyone’s mind right now.
But I also think we need to consider that the police, who put themselves in harms way every day, were trying to do the right thing. Maybe the training was wrong, maybe they made a costly mistake, but they are humans trying to help other people and this rhetoric suggests they let a boy die through political correctness and malice.
I was brought up to respect and be thankful to those who risk their lives every day to protect us. The police have problems, but most are hero’s.
This response is unpatriotic to those who serve the crown, and ignores the comments made by the Judge, and the boys father.
This is not British behaviour. It also detracts the blame from an evil killer, who is solely the person who should be the subject of any hate right now.
Lessons need to be learned, and training needs to be better. There are legitimate problems to fix.
But putting this on a public servant who was trying to protect us, who will live with this feeling of guilt for the rest of their lives, feels wrong. And heartless.
@sharkrado I actually find that response funny and rather disarming. It’s also a great way to not commit your biggest prime real estate of free time on a speculative encounter without sounding rude. This person is smart and funny. A keeper.
