Why does everything feel fake?
We have a Congress that won't pass something 83% people want.
We have courts that release criminals faster than police can arrest them.
We have schools that graduate kids who can’t read.
We have colleges that charge $200K for degrees that don’t get you jobs.
We have a non-profit system that profits from our tax dollars.
We have a health care industry that profits from you staying sick.
We have “representatives” who don’t represent us.
We have “news” networks that report opinions and call them facts.
We have an insurance industry that fights every single claim.
None of it works the way they tell you it works.
And deep down, everyone knows it.
It just all feels so so fake…
@dmichaelclary While he may have some important cautions, the overall takeaway is still the main theme addressed in Michael’s book: don’t try to change your circumstances; just sit back and take one for the team and you’ll be rewarded in heaven.
@dmichaelclary Then critics come along with sophisticated biblical arguments to temper their enthusiasm and relegate them back to the sidelines.
(I say this as a friend of Dr. Tabb.)
This is an issue where America is going to be leaning heavily on its Anglo-Protestant heritage.
Imagine becoming Roman Catholic because you think it's more based than the actual heritage that settled and civilized America.
1) No foreigner has a right to come here.
2) It doesn’t matter which cabal of megalomaniacs or singular megalomaniac controls Ukraine. I have nothing in common with either Davos or Moscow other than melanin levels. Not our war, and never was.
3) Islam isn’t compatible with Western Civilization.
4) There is no Biblical obligation for us to sacrifice our country for another country beyond provable dual interests.
5) Antisemitism is historically a sign your society is succumbing to knuckle draggers.
6) Mass importing Hinduism or any other pagan religion into America is a terrible idea.
7) There ought to be an outright immigration moratorium.
8) The social compact is broken. So there is no shared heritage or Constitutional exegesis with the Left.
9) We’re not a nation of laws, and we never have been. We’re a nation of political will and always will be.
10) The law, including the Constitution, is what you’re willing to enforce. Everything else is just a blog.
This has been my Ted Talk.
The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty
WATCH: U.S. Comptroller of the Currency Jonathan Gould says Minnesota ranks No. 1 per capita for healthcare-related fraud.
Gould said non-mortgage fraud reports in Minnesota more than doubled between 2020 and 2024, while suspicious activity reports tied to check fraud increased nearly 300%.
“Minnesota, as you know, has seen fraud spiral out of control in recent years,” he said.
Gen X, we are not the passed over or forgotten generation. For a long time I thought this way, and clouded my judgment on things. But now I see we have a very important assignment. We are to be the enduring, resetting generation.
We endured watered down, pottery barn churches that built pastoral brands and not the kingdom of God, so we reset by making that old time religion great again.
We endured being latch key kids, so we now reset by being there for our kids.
We endured mass divorce, so we now reset by finishing the race with the wife of our youth.
We endured being the first porn is mainstream generation on video snd computers, so we reset by making it as difficult as possible to obtain it in the future and making monogamy and the nuclear family hot again.
We endured being passed on mountains of debt that can never be repaid well into our prime earning years, so we reset by making sure we leave our kids an inheritance. If possible, we give it to them early when they need our help. And they’re gonna need more help with the down payment on their first house at 25 or 30 than a bunch of money at 50 when we die.
We endured grandparents that posted more Facebook vacation than pics of their grandkids, so we reset by taking some vacations (we worked hard too) in retirement but prioritizing being there for our adult kids and our grandkids. And because we want to be. Grandkids are the ultimate inheritance of a life well lived. Work as hard at being there for them that love us as we did being there for a boss who didn’t.
And if we endure and reset in this way as much as possible, we will have won our millennial children and Gen Z grandchildren the opportunity to truly make America great again.
@JustOpperman So many Amens to this.
I get such terrible looks anytime I suggest this.
What’s the big deal about the Beatles? Such simple, boring music with a loser leader and cheesy aesthetic.
Modern schooling asks one question: what should a child know?
The Greeks asked a different one: what kind of person should this child become? They even had a specific word for the idea.
Paideia.
Entire tomes have been written about this specific word because it carries so much weight. Werner Jaeger alone wrote 3 volumes just on this word.
It meant the shaping of a person from childhood into a good citizen of the polis. It assumed full enculturation toward a specific end.
It certainly included what a child ought to know, but it was focused more on the formation of their character. On virtue.
Modern schooling can't even tell you what virtue *is*.
Paul uses the same word in Ephesians when he tells fathers to raise their children in the paideia of the Lord. To form them into model citizens of the city of God.
One thing is sure. Sending your children into a system that knows not virtue for 6 hours per day enculturates those children into that same system, and not any other.
If Athens sent their boys to be educated by Sparta, did they have any right to expect their boys to come back Athenians?
