A total solar eclipse will be visible in parts of South America today. If that's a bit out of your way, maybe plan to catch one of these. https://t.co/bg6H5oZ0hx
Conclusion: Foggy conditions may be associated with more positive attitudes towards luminous-nosed cervids.

#Fishing nets are incredibly effective at catching fish and ANYTHING else in its path - #bycatch.
Bycatch is responsible for 50% of all #sharks caught and has ultimately resulted in the disappearance of 89% of hammerhead sharks! #2020EBE
Insects are vital for life on earth, they allow pollination, seed dispersal and countless other functions to the ecosystem. Their decline is a current crisis. If you want to read more on their decline, I attached a paper below. 🪳🪲🦋💡 #EBE2020#2020EBE

Stress was measured by taking blood samples from recently caught sharks. Interestingly, female sharks appear to be better at coping with stress than males. This could be due to the shark’s copulation strategies. Further research will be needed to confirm this hypothesis #EBE2020
This week’s seminar was presented by Dr Valentina Scarponi on the stress suffered by sharks after being caught. Bycatch is a huge issue caused by the fishing industry and it is important we understand how this effects our oceans wildlife #EBE2020#2020EBE#Sharks 🦈🪝
Currently NINE of the world's biggest supertrawlers are in the English Channel. The government needs to enforce banning in UK PAs and understand the detrimental impact they have to our marine ecosystems.

A new climate report has been released by @theCCCuk. Check it out if you can but the main points:
• UK should cut GHG emissions 78% by 2035
• Sales of gas boilers should be banned entirely by 2033
• Electricity decarbonised by 2035

In early January, we had no COVID-19 tests, no treatments, no vaccines. At the end of the year, we've made huge progress — but there's still a long way to go. https://t.co/Hp7w5FpUSt
Genetic colour aberrations such as leucism are almost unheard of in pumas compared to other felids, however researchers aren’t exactly sure as to why this is. @NatGeo#genetics#EBE2020

A great seminar this week by @DamienFarine on the social processes groups of animals go through when making decisions. If anyone is interested in learning more on this topic I suggest reading this paper on decision making in baboons. 🐒#EBE2020#2020EBE

If anyone is interested, a good place to start reading is this paper about artificial light at night and the difficulties it presents to local glow worms. Co-authored by two Sussex University staff! #EBE2020#2020EBE#conservation

Currently looking through research papers on artificial light at night and the effects it can have on many nocturnal species. Most of the papers I am finding have only recently been published. If anyone is interested in conservation, I urge them to read it! #EBE2020#2020EBE 💡
A recent #genetic study has found that populations of the vulnerable northern, central and southern greater glider are morphologically different, and thus should be classified as three separate species.

(2/2) Due to their high levels of TEs, they can be used to observe changes in their population dynamics. This could show some vertebrate genomic evolution in a phylogenetic context. #2020EBE#EBE2020
(1/2) Another great seminar this week, presented by @bourgeois_yann about transposable elements (TEs) and their role in genomic structure, organization and show how they lead to phenotypic changes. Modelled by (the very cute) green anole, Anolis carolinensis.🧬🦎#2020EBE#EBE2020
The Great Green Wall of Africa is a project that aims to restore degraded land from Senegal to Djibouti, it is however struggling to get off the ground. International cooperation is needed to to halt land degradation and halt desertification!

A very interesting seminar by @NCarreck on the importance of #citizenscience and the role it can play in allowing the assessment of wildlife. I recommend everyone checks out @insignia_bee project! They do great work on pesticide contamination within honeybees.🐝 #EBE2020#2020EBE
