@EverydaySens He has to clear waivers in 26/27 so it is what it is. 3 goalies is getting a bit more common in the NHL, but the Sens will take the waiver risk and let him be the guy in Belleville. It would be tough to lose him in September but you hope most NHL teams have their tandems set.
@brandonpiller1 They boosted their AHL depth significantly. Feels like there are legitimate call-up options now including the ability for Halliday and Yakemchuk to float without waivers. They have faith in their backup decision. They also are a faster team than the start of last year. Have faith
@ShackTS No proof Skinner could have "easily been had". Sens are invested in Ullmark, signing Ersson helps. Ersson has upside and can be an average backup, which is all the sens need. Ersson was great at the 4 nations when called upon, and was 4-0 .934 in the 2025 worlds. A fine backup
Regarding the Samuel Ersson signing by the #Sens: Yes, he had a bad go of things in the NHL miscast as a starter on a struggling team. But as a backup, it could work. MORE IMPORTANTLY though - he is a Swede.
Ullmark had some struggles last season. Maybe a few countrymen on his roster will help him. Sens also acquired Eklund, recently. So the hidden value, Ullmark's headspace, could be big. Ullmark is a top NHL goalie when he's 'on'.
@ShackTS With a back up you need wins, he gets them. A technically sound goalie who plays like Ullmark. Easy to say go get the best UFA goalie available. Sens are prioritizing making Ullmark comfortable which is important when considering the mental health concerns. He is a fine backup
@ShackTS Is Askarov a bad goalie? Stanley cup champion Adin Hill? Binnington? Bobrovsky? all these guys have similar analytics. I get why you are low on him, I just dont think its commensurate to the UFA market, the Merilainen risk, and the potential of Ersson on a good defensive team.
@ShackTS Harsh viewpoint. Outside of Skinner, Ingram and Tarasov, all the UFA goalies are in their 30s. sens would have to outbid teams to sign them. He is a winning goalie, entering his prime, who played for a bad Flyer team. He will be an average backup which is all they need.
@ShackTS Holy chill, both other Sens goalies had similar analytics behind an elite defensive sens team. This is a solid backup signing in a very thin goalie market
@SensCentral He plays a bit like Ullmark, positioning/control and rebound control is good. Played in front of a bad Philly team for a while and still won more than he lost. Ullmark and Merilainen had bad analytics behind an elite defensive team in 25/26, would you say they are bad goalies?
@EverydaySens So you would rather run it back with Reimer and Merilainen? No guarantees free agent goalies would sign with Ottawa. Based on the trade I'm guessing sens knew the few UFA goalies wouldn't sign with them. Ersson is a winning goalie from a mediocre team. Chill.
@Hussbag89@SensCentral Possibly. Yakemchuk does change up the dynamic of the blue line alot, we have seen the skill but whats his B game, can he defend as a top 4 D? Either they roll the dice with what they have or they add a top 4 right shot and have arguably a top 5 defense in the entire NHL.
@SensCentral It's been a crazy week for the Sens. Lots of optimism with Eklund and fresh off a draft where they prioritized skill. However, it still sits a bit sour not adding McTavish or Peterka when they seem like a great fit and were long rumored to be Sens targets. Staois has to add a UFA
@ComingInHotSens The Sens need to add a gritty 4th liner, like a Malenstyn. Macdermid will be buried in the AHL. Giroux will resign. Holliday can float between AHL and NHL as he doesnt need waivers. Sens can add a 4th liner and top 6 winger in free agency, Cousins is out.
Got you covered for the final pick of the first round!
With the 32nd overall pick in the 2026 #NHLDraft the #Sens have selected Jaxon Cover from the London Knights.
Jaxon Cover to Ottawa.
Cover quickly established himself as one of the most intriguing prospects, finishing the regular season with 20 goals and 52 points.
The Cayman Islands native is one of the rawest prospects in the draft, having only started playing ice hockey at the age of 13.
So the fact that he has been so productive with the puck and so dangerous without it has really excited scouts. He’s so quick, using his speed to force turnovers and break into scoring lanes. He’s creative, and as long as he continues to work on the smaller details in his game, he’ll be a solid prospect. #NHLDraft
Jonas Lagerberg Hoen to Ottawa.
VERY interesting.
JLH is a good shooter who skates well and has a big 6-foot-3 frame. He missed most of the season due to a season-ending injury… in October.
But scouts really believe in him because the raw fundamentals are there. He was one that I questioned due to the lack of actual playing time, but scouts really got me interested in the Swede in the latter stages of the season after pointing out just how often he dominated shifts in various ways.
The raw talent is still very intriguing. #NHLDraft
