Parent, spouse, bookworm, a student of all things medieval, a former elected school board member, and a person who enjoys disagreement. Gwell dysg na golud
@CTVSteveMurphy@CTVAtlantic The Republicans are a fine example of what happens when a political party allows authoritarian decision-making to be the norm. Put simply, to be Republican means you follow Trump whatever he does. Time has run out and this is the new political reality.
@MLInstitute@Educhatter Great work! I wonder, what will cause a new historical balance? Will access to new data and records, such as that held by the Vatican, be enough to change the deep-seeded culture and historical interpretations that have shaped our current understanding?
@chronicleherald Premier Houston is the current caretaker of our provincial democracy and much of what he is doing in pursuit of a 'MAGA agenda' can be undone by his successors. Unfortunately, the political parties are reluctant to make democratic reforms and guardrails a part of their platform.
@nsgov Changes to the AG's practices ought to have its own separate legislation. The AG is an independent officer of the House of Assembly and stands somewhat apart from Government Organization and Administration (which is the focus of Bill 1). Omnibus bills are often problematic.
@nsgov The entry in the plan for 'Chignecto Isthmus: 1km access road from Laphanhe Aboiteau', under Public Works projects, should probably read LaPlanche Aboiteau, right?
@nsgov Under 'Investing in Schools, it is stated 'School communities, including principals and School Advisory Councils, work with their region or conseil scolaire to identify capital needs.' That can only work when the Long-Range Outlook document for each RCE is kept up-to-date.
@NovaScotiaESM The US, as political scientists Julio CarriΓ³n and Carlos de la Torre have noted, is at a Hobbesian moment and a decisive political confrontation is almost certain - when it comes, what path will the US take?
@NovaScotiaESM The US has become a populist hybrid regime, with democratic rules and authoritarian characteristics. Remember, Trump talks about his mandate, he is working within established rules (no new laws are being invoked), and there is popular support for radical institutional change.
@chronicleherald With a supermajority, the PCs could easily change Section 60 (5B) of the Rules and Forms of Procedure to refer to all elected members of the legislative instead of a list of members from each party. That change could make the legislature work so much better.
@NovaScotiaESM This should also apply to any other MLAs across the province who put out similar signs. Is this something that should be shared by the Speaker's Office across province-wide media?
@Educhatter Govts have gone to great lengths to centralize the education system - but to what end? Using wording from the Minister's Action Plan, govt has supposedly built a better school system but where is a brighter future for students, teachers, admin, and parents? What abject failure.
@DrConnyS It is a consequence of going with the minimum amount of time for the election campaign. The Election Act states nominations close on the twentieth day before election day at two oβclock in the afternoon. Yet, the continuous poll starts on the twenty-seventh day before election.
@TimHoustonNS Increasingly, it looks like fixed election dates do not work all that well. Too often, the months prior to the date are dominated by a lack of decision making, parties leaning into hard edged politics instead of decent policies, poor admin, and issues being left to linger.
@NLWales The most unsettling items I know of are Sir John William's knife and three glass slides, donated to the library in 1926. Did the glass slides really have smears of uterine tissue? [I do no go so far as the claims in the 'Uncle Jack' book but it is quite a story.]
@NSSchoolEyes@nseducation Add to that, there is the concern of doing the best for students with Complex Behavioural Needs. That part seems to rely on an inclusion model that is not yet working well. For example, what is the likelihood of 'alternative learning settings or schedules' in a rural school?
@NSSchoolEyes@nseducation There are complex parts of it yet to be clarified. The scope is broad - from school grounds to property immediately adjacent to school grounds, school-sponsored or school related activities, school buses, bus stops, and in some cases anything that happens off school grounds.
@NSSchoolEyes@NSPFPE It used to be that the enrolment numbers were taken on 30 September; that is after start of school adjustments and changes had been made. Is the tally still done at the end of Sept, or has it moved to another day?
@powerman1954@CBCNS@CCRCE_NS@TimHoustonNS@CTVAtlantic This is beating on an old drum but NS desperately needs a RURAL EDUCATION STRATEGY, which would include busing, as well as staff retention, youth vulnerability, opportunities for rural students, and a host of other topics. The lack of such a policy is a critical gap.
