You have to give Real Madrid credit for how they’ve approached this transfer window.
The last two seasons exposed almost every weakness in this squad. Instead of ignoring the problems or pretending they didn’t exist, the club identified them one by one.
Last summer, they tried solving some of those issues by investing in potential. It was a long-term approach, but not every gamble paid off. Mastantuono, Huijsen, Trent. But Rather than dwelling on it or stubbornly sticking to the same plan, they’ve come back this summer with a completely different strategy bringing in more established, proven players who can make an immediate impact.
The defence needed experience, physicality, and balance? They brought in Konate, Dumfries, and Cucurella.
The midfield has lacked the control, rhythm, and authority Toni Kroos gave them since his retirement. Instead of hoping someone internally develops into that profile overnight, they signed Bernardo Silva and are still pushing for Rodri two players who can dictate games and give Madrid back the control they’ve been missing.
They moved for Diomande to add another genuine option in the right wing.
They also recognised that Madrid have struggled against teams that sit deep. Sometimes you need a different type of striker, someone who offers a physical presence, attacks crosses, occupies defenders, and changes the dynamic of a game from the bench. Carlos Espi fits that profile perfectly.
They didn’t go for individual names alone, it’s the thinking behind every move. Every signing addresses a specific weakness that was exposed over the last two seasons. There’s no any panic buying or chasing big names just for headlines. Every arrival appears to have a tactical purpose.
Whether every signing succeeds is another conversation. No club gets every transfer right. But when you look at this window as a whole, it’s hard not to see a clear recruitment strategy. They recognised the squad’s flaws, accepted what wasn’t working, and acted decisively to fix them.
This is what a transfer window with a clear plan looks like. Identify the problems, recruit players that solve those problems, and give your manager the best possible chance to succeed. Real Madrid have done exactly that, and they deserve credit for it.
