Happy birthday to Jack Clarke, who turns 24 today. 🏴🥳
The man who scored 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 Sunderland when they turned into prime Barcelona against Reading. 🥶
There’s a very weird and I think subconsciously mysoginistic issue happening in Rugby at the moment. Which is the devaluing of a woman’s, more specifically a mother’s, role in the identity and background of a player.
Kyle Steyn has a Scottish mum. Yet people say he’s South African and foreign. But if his mum was South African and his dad was Scottish and nothing else was different, there’d be much less of this language. If he was Kyle (which is a Scottish name btw, oh and his middle name is Douglas, also Scottish) McDonald people would treat him differently.
Same can be said for Sione Tuipulotu. Tuipulotu’s mum’s mum is Scottish. But if it was his dad’s dad, and his name was Sione Macpherson there’d be less people saying he’s not a Scot.
Even though it would make no difference on how Scottish or not they are. The surname of the player, coming from the tradition of a wife taking a husbands surname as they were now their husbands property, shouldn’t affect how you treat them or their identity.
It’s completely devaluing who they are.
