the reason i didn’t like calculus and linear algebra in college is simple:
i was learning the math before i understood why i needed it.
• matrices were just grids of numbers.
• derivatives were rules to memorize.
• eigenvectors were something you calculated for an exam.
• jacobians were another ugly matrix.
then i got deeper into robotics, ai, physics, and control.
suddenly:
• matrices became transformations between coordinate frames
• derivatives became motion and rates of change
• jacobians connected joint motion → end-effector motion
• eigenvalues started telling me about stability and system behavior
• gradients became the machinery behind optimization and learning
the math didn’t change.
the context did.
sometimes you don’t hate a subject.
you just haven’t found the problem that makes you need it yet.
lol I had the same type of sentiment reading the introduction of “the ex-evangelicals” Like “oh wow, your parents took care of you guys, and fed you dessert”. 😂
But also, this should be a warning too I think that your kids don’t thrive quarantined on a culdesac which is what I think is the real issue.
“Oh wow, your parents loved you and raised you in the faith, but you couldn’t watch Harry Potter and you couldn’t sleep around, so you deconstructed. You’re so brave. A real free thinker.”
Julian the Apostate, a pagan, complained about the Christians venerating the relics of Christian martyrs by saying it smelled of “the stench of graves and dead men’s bones.”
This is Christianity and the irony is that it is actually you who is echoing the pagans
Boomers wrote shit down and you can get their ancient writings for cheap on Abe books. I have some neat ones about fluid mechanics. Another one on mechanical resonance
We are essentially in an infrastructural time bomb where the entire American economy is held together by a few thousand boomers who refused to teach anything to anyone and just held their cushy job until they were 80.
People forget that when an east coast oil pipeline was hacked during Biden, Congress dragged the managers of the pipeline into a hearing and asked why they didn't run it manually and the response was "everyone that knows how is either retired or dead."
Gonna say it because the math maths: paying off your mortgage early is one of the worst things middle class families do with their money.
I know that sounds insane to some. Your parents told you to pay off the house. Dave Ramsey said the same thing. Every fiber of your being says debt is bad.
But this is the math when you send an extra $500 / month to your mortgage company instead of investing it.
Let's say you have a $400,000 mortgage at 6.5%. Your monthly payment is roughly $2,500. You decide to throw an extra $500 / month at the principal because you want to be debt free as soon as possible.
That extra $500 / month will save you about $130,000 in interest over the life of the loan and you'll pay it off 9 years early. Feels amazing, especially because your parents are proud.
Now let's say you take that same $500 / month and put it into an infix fund averaging 10% annually (which is the historical average of the S&P 500 over any 30 year period).
After 30 years, that $500 / month becomes $1,130,000.
You saved $130,000 in interest but gave up over $1,000,000 in wealth.
And it gets worse. Mortgage interest is tax deductible. So your effective rate on that 6.5% mortgage is closer to 5% if you're itemizing. You are paying off a 5% loan early instead of earning 10%. Every extra dollar you send to the bank is earning you 5 cents when it could be earning you 10.
The house you live in doesn't compound or pay dividends. It sits there and costs you property taxes, insurance, maintenance, and the opportunity cost of your capital.
Wealthy people use cheap debt as a tool. They borrow at 5% and deploy at 10%, 15%, 20%. They understand that not all debt is created equal.
I'm not saying go lever up to your eyeballs. I'm saying the $500 / month you're proudly sending to your mortgage company every month could be the most expensive savings account you've ever opened.
They lease time pieces?!
Kourtney and I had a little weekend vacation in the big city and while at the wood field mall, I stopped to look at some shinies. The jeweler pulls out a Hamilton and then begins to explain a LEASING option. A LEASING OPTION
Your ancestors were evil.
That is why they died. The sting of death is sin.
But God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
Saw a video of the Indiana Lt. Gov. saying that Christians have forgotten to hate the things God hates.
I disagree.
The American church loves things they were never supposed to love: money and power.
To protect those loves, they hate anything that threatens their hold on them.
