As we follow the developments of this war, we must realize that Abiy Ahmed’s narrative promotes a central idea: that the primary adversary is no longer just internal to Ethiopia, but has become a regionally-allied front backed from abroad.
Linking Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea transforms the internal conflict into part of a broader geopolitical confrontation.
The message is directed primarily at the Ethiopian domestic audience, under the premise that what is happening is not merely a local rebellion, but an external conspiracy targeting the state's sovereignty and future.
This rhetoric justifies the continuation of military operations and increases domestic cohesion around the army and the government.
Naturally, the direct accusations against Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea raise the cost of supporting any Ethiopian armed group, put these countries on the diplomatic defensive, and send a message to the international community that Ethiopia views any support for these groups as interference in its internal affairs.
Talk of keeping Ethiopia preoccupied with its internal affairs is directly tied to Addis Ababa’s pursuit of access to the Red Sea—meaning that anyone obstructing internal stability is simultaneously obstructing Ethiopia's maritime ambition.
Ethiopia’s declaration that it will act with wisdom and self-restraint aims to portray the military as a responsible actor that avoids unnecessary escalation while maintaining the right to respond.
Abiy Ahmed’s narrative here is fundamentally an attempt to reframe the ongoing conflict in northern Ethiopia as part of a larger regional confrontation concerning Ethiopia’s standing and influence in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
The war in Ethiopia had never stopped even after the so-called Pretoria Agreement of 2022. Although the mainstream media has largely ignored it, tens of thousands of people have been killed since the agreement was signed, particularly in the Amhara region. Now, the country's armed movements, including the TPLF, Fano, and the OLA, have formed an alliance to end the war by defeating its source: the regime of Abiy Ahmed.
@RasSonderriis As a regime sympathizer, you're merely trying to mislead those who haven't followed the crisis from the outset. The rest of the world is well aware of who bears responsibility for the crisis in #Ethiopia and, in part, the ongoing conflict in #Sudan.
@RasSonderriis I myself am right there with the millions of Ethiopians immersed in the regime's sea of cruelty; what are you talking about? How much did they pay you? Have you covered your conscience with money or ignorance?
GLOBAL TRAVEL ALERT‼️
Ethiopian Airlines is accused of violating intern'l aviation & human-rights standards & serving as an instrument of a regime accused of genocide. Travelers worldwide are urged to avoid the airline amid warnings it'd be a target of attack/terrorist diversion.
BREAKING: UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres accuses Abiy Ahmed's regime of ignoring his requests for an explanation regarding human rights abuses in Ethiopia's Tigray, Amhara, Afar, and Somali regions.
But the main source of all conflict and instability is the tyrant regime of #abiyahmed, which is not only a dictatorship but also ruthlessly genocidal! He is the most atrocious regime in human history
Sources in the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia revealed that ALL bank accounts opened in Tigray has been suspended. This means Tigrayans are denied access to their hard earned savings. #TigrayGenocide continues.

Ethiopia: Rebel alliance pushes deeper into Afar
Footage shows the Tigray Defense Forces and fighters from the Afar Revolutionary Democratic Front entering the town of Erebti in Ethiopia's Afar region. Geolocation by @Intelynx appears to place them at the town's northern entrance, advancing towards the local school.
Both groups belong to the Coalition of Ethiopian Popular Forces for Survival, a seven-member alliance that also includes Fano and the Oromo Liberation Army, formed with the aim of toppling Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.
Since September 22, heavy fighting has spread beyond Tigray into Afar and Amhara, and the TPLF says it is now in a "full-blown war" with federal forces. The government still holds the military edge, with a large drone arsenal and around 500,000 troops. But the front lines are moving.
Exclusive: Ethiopian drone strike destroys Tigray high school
Footage obtained by DNE Africa shows the aftermath of an Ethiopian army drone strike on May Hansse Secondary School on September 23. The school is the main high school in May Hansse, a town in Asgede Tsimbla district in north-western Tigray, about 44 km west of Shire.
The video shows drone wreckage scattered across the compound, including twisted metal panels, a small engine, a propeller and a panel marked "1744". A classroom has lost its roof entirely, walls are stripped to the rebar by shrapnel, and books and school supplies lie scattered across the floor.
Neither the footage nor eyewitnesses who spoke to DNE Africa point to any military target at the school, making the strike indiscriminate and unlawful under the laws of war.
The attack follows others on civilian areas. Human Rights Watch says an apparent government airstrike on a residential compound in Mekelle on August 20 wounded 13 civilians, including seven children, and should be investigated as a possible war crime. @hrw
Fighting has since spread from Tigray into Afar and Amhara, as seven armed groups unite to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.

Every action has a reaction.
You can’t spend years boasting about having Egypt “by the neck” through the Nile, help the UAE/RSF war machine against Sudan, talk endlessly about taking Assab and Eritrean sovereign territory by force - while buying weapons from every corner of the globe…
…and then suddenly cry:
“Eritrea! Egypt! Sudan! They’re supporting our enemies!”
What exactly did you expect?
You threaten three countries, interfere with their core national-security interests, then act shocked when they start treating YOU as a security threat.
Coward! That’s consequences.
You threw stones for years and only now discovered you live in a glass house?
The irony is almost perfect. #AbiyAhmedMustGo #AbiyGenocide #RSF #Sudan #Egypt #Eritrea
Following a predictable escalation of fighting in northern Ethiopia, new @hrw report into an indiscriminate airstrike on August 20 in Mekelle that left 13 civilians injured underscores need for pressure on parties to guarantee monitoring, aid access https://t.co/yyQvb4Ifje
