Vasudhaa Narayanan’s photographic work spoiled fruit includes close-up images of parts of women’s bodies. Arms, knees, stomachs, breasts, surgery scars, birthmarks, stretchmarks, hair and so on are pictured in domestic spaces, around cushions and on beds, against daylight. These are spliced together with texts: anecdotes, memories, confessions, opinions. Among the experiences the women recall are passing judgements from a cousin, interactions at school, even a doctor who equates looking feminine with not having polycystic ovarian disease—all of which make evident the many prevalent societal assumptions and norms about bodies.
