One of the greatest acts of vengeance in history is when the Persian commander, Abu Tahir al-Jannabi led the sack of Mecca.
With his 700 men, he slaughtered over 30'000 Muslims and defiled their Kaaba, broke its holy stone, and turned it into a toilet.
Tahir is quoted as tormenting the Muslims in Mecca during the attack by stating:
"Since your god goes to heaven and leaves his house on earth unattended, then let his house be plundered and destroyed.’
He then went over the top of the Kaaba and said:
‘I am in God and God is in Me. Where is your God? I am your great God. Where are the birds of God (Tayr al ababeel) that protect the Kaaba? where are the stones of fire (Hijara min sejeel)?’
How was he able to kill so many with such few men?
It is said that the pilgrims were convinced (and prayed instead of defending themselves) that Allah would intervene. Allah had promised to protect the Kaaba in the Quran, Sura 105:1-5 where is said the Ababeel birds Tahir mockingly mentioned are said to protect the site by dropping stones on any attackers.
He pulled down the covering on the Kaaba, tore it up, and carried it off as plunder, all the while saying in mockery [quoting from the Qur’an 3. 91], ‘And he who entered it was safe’, and [106. 4], ‘He saved them from fear.’ ‘Since you had gone inside the house, why were you not safe from our swords?’
According to Nizam Al Mulk (in Siyasatnama), Tahir "broke the black Stone in two, and put the pieces on the two sides of a latrine pit; when he squatted over the pit, he put his feet one on each half of the stone; he commanded public cursing of the prophet"
Tahir then brought a Zoroastrian friend named Zakir from Isfahan, to be king of the Lahsa region in Arabia.
Today Islamic scholars claim that Tahir was just a discontented Muslim from another branch to save face.
However, we know from prominent historians at the time like Abu al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi who said about Tahir and his men "that they are a group of Persian atheistic heretics who believe in the prophecy of Zarathustra and Mazdak."
One factor preventing the Arabization of the areas east of Persia/Iran's core was the influence of pro-Iranian dynasties such as the Samanids, Buyyids, Ziyarids, and Saffarids. This has led to a hesitation among Arab historians to discuss these events in detail.
Additionally, the Qarmatians under Tahir, who were later defeated without mercy, were unable to share their own accounts of their rebellious actions.
In the end, the black stone of the Kaaba was found, dirty and in pieces but has since been put back together and placed back at the site.
Muslims continue to touch and kiss the stone believing it washes away their sins.
