There is a big difference between having a gay character and the character being gay being a major storyline.

Bioware seemed to have been given more autonomy than most EA studios and ultimately, and while corporate decisions may be why EA needed to tighten the belt, it is Bioware's fault for losing all trust that they will be profitable. Their last game came out 2 years ago and eas a flop but it seems like they had barely started on their next one.
