LAGOS DESERVES MORE THAN POLITICIANS.
I Strongly Believe Competence Should Become The New Campaign Promise
Every election cycle, Nigerians ask the same question:
"Who will win?" Perhaps we have been asking the wrong question all along.
Maybe the better question should be:
"Who is truly prepared to lead?"
For too long, our politics has rewarded visibility over value, popularity over preparation, and loyalty over competence. Campaigns are often built around personalities, endorsements, and political structures, while conversations about capacity, character, and institutional thinking receive far less attention than they deserve.
Yet, if there is one thing every successful organisation teaches us, it is that LEADERSHIP IS TOO IMPORTANT TO BE LEFT TO CHANCE.
No serious company appoints a Chief Executive Officer because of popularity. Hospitals do not hand over operating theatres to the loudest doctor. Airlines do not allow passengers to vote for who flies the aircraft.
Competence matters, preparation is important and experience is vital.
So, why should governance be any different?
As Lagos gradually approaches another election season, I find myself less interested in campaign slogans and more interested in the journeys of those seeking responsibility.
Because leadership does not begin on inauguration or swearing-in day.
It begins years before, in the choices people make, the responsibilities they accept, the institutions they help build, and the problems they choose to solve when no one is watching.
That was the thought that crossed my mind when I took time to learn more about DAMILOLA SONAYON JAMES. @JamesSonayon
Beyond the political conversations surrounding her emergence, what stood out to me was not merely the office she now seeks. It was the breadth of experiences that prepared her for public leadership.
Her journey spans the private sector, public service, community development, sustainability, human resource management, and grassroots politics. She has served in party leadership, worked within government institutions, and built a professional career outside politics.
Regardless of political affiliation, one thing stands out: her journey reflects something our democracy needs more of: leaders who understand both institutions and the people those institutions are meant to serve.
Too often, we applaud appointments but rarely study the years of quiet work that make those appointments meaningful.
Lagos, perhaps more than any other state in Nigeria, understands this reality.
As Africa's largest commercial hub, Lagos is not merely another state. It is a complex ecosystem of business, innovation, infrastructure, culture, and opportunity. Its economy rivals those of several African countries. The quality of its leadership therefore affects not only millions of residents but also investors, entrepreneurs (including the Akara and Kuli-Kuli seller), and the national economy.
Such complexity demands more than political instincts. It demands strategic thinking, emotional intelligence and administrative competence.
It demands leaders who have solved problems before making new promises and understand accountability because they have lived it.
However, this is not about one political party and it is not about one candidate or about one election. It is about the future of leadership in Nigeria.
And I believe that is the Nigeria many of us have quietly been praying for.
A nation where public office is seen not as an entitlement, but as a sacred responsibility.
That, to me, is the kind of leadership Lagos deserves, and perhaps, the kind of leadership Nigeria must increasingly demand.
May God bless Lagos State. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
And may our politics continue to evolve from the pursuit of power to the pursuit of purpose.
Happy New Month, Great Minds.
Abdulkabir Anifowose.

Celebration of Impact. Integrity. Inspiration.
"The beautiful thing about impact is that it speaks even when the person responsible for it remains silent.
One thing that has always fascinated me about you is your ability to remain grounded despite your accomplishments. Many people rise in status and become difficult to reach. Many rise in influence and become distant. But you have continued to carry yourself with a simplicity and humility that makes people comfortable around you and grateful to know you.
May every good you have done for others return to you in multiple folds. May your children and generations after you continue to enjoy the rewards of your kindness. And may your final abode be Al-Jannah Firdaus.
Thank you for your impact.
Thank you for your example.
And Thank you for your existence.
Like you always wish everyone, May your tomorrow be better than your yesterday, Legend. @AbuAJimoh
Happy Children’s Day
THE BEST OF US CANNOT CONTINUE TO STAY SILENT;
The older I grow, the more I realize that politics is too important for good people to completely ignore.
The polity is tense, and honestly, the standard for getting into politics today is becoming even more troubling.
Political activities across the country in recent days have been both interesting and deeply concerning. From the drama in Nasarawa State surrounding the alleged anointed candidate of Governor Abdullahi Sule and the public reactions from the state's political stakeholders, to the unfolding permutations in Kwara State.
Move to Oyo State and you see another drama entirely, including the recent viral video around the Olubadan Palace. In Lagos State, there are visible struggles over political control and representation from Agege to Surulere, while in Rivers State, politics itself has almost started looking like a “two-factor authentication process” led by the FCT Minister, where people are left to ask if he is a member of the ruling APC or of the Opposition party, PDP.
Honestly, it is interesting to watch, but at the same time, it is saddening.
And the biggest challenge is not even the drama itself. The biggest challenge is that we have subconsciously surrendered politics to a particular class of people as though leadership is their birthright alone.
While some of us are busy stacking professional certifications, degrees and corporate experiences, many others entered active politics immediately after secondary school and have spent years learning power, influence, grassroots control and political survival from the political leaders in their various states.
While many young professionals are learning leadership from MDs and CEOs inside boardrooms, others are learning practical politics and governance directly from the streets and structures that eventually determine who controls society.
That is the real issue!
It genuinely surprises me when many intelligent and promising young Nigerians proudly say they are not interested in politics. Please note and know that no matter how high you climb in the corporate world, even if you become an MD or global executive, the quality of political leadership in your country will still determine;
● inflation,
● security,
● business environment,
● taxes,
● electricity,
● education,
● and ultimately the quality of your life.
Politics will affect everybody whether you participate in it or not.
And sadly, many young people entering politics today are not driven by ideology, competence or national conviction. Many simply see politics as the fastest route to survival, influence, wealth or access.
Very few conversations today are about:
● policy,
● governance philosophy,
● institutional development,
● or long-term national vision.
Everything now revolves around alignment, loyalty, power blocs and personal interests.
That is why we have a bigger problem than many of us realize.
Because if competent, responsible and thoughtful people continue avoiding politics completely, leadership spaces will naturally be occupied by those who are simply the most desperate to control them.
And history has shown repeatedly that when good people completely disengage from leadership and governance, society eventually pays heavily for it.
If this cycle must change, then the best of us cannot continue staying silent or absent.
We must speak up.
We must participate.
And as much as possible, we must act.
Because if the best of us refuse to lead, the worst of us will eventually lead the best of us.
May God bless Nigeria, guide our leaders rightly and may Nigeria and Africa truly become great in our lifetime.

SUCCESS IS PATIENT, HUMANS ARE NOT;
For many years, supporting Arsenal became a yearly masterclass, a free one at that, in hope, disappointment, banter, resilience and endurance for the fans.
A whole generation of Arsenal fans grew up hearing:
“almost there,”
“next season,”
“Orí ogbadé,”
“second place FC,”
and the famous,
“they don’t have the mentality.”
And honestly, life itself behaves exactly like that sometimes.
People celebrate outcomes but rarely respect process. Everybody wants the trophy, the applause and the recognition, but very few truly understand what it means to stay committed to something through years of rebuilding, inconsistency, failure and public embarrassment.
For over a decade after their last league title in 2004, Arsenal slowly became the favorite example people used whenever they wanted to mock “almost success.” Coaches changed, players came and left, expectations dropped and even some fans stopped believing fully.
And honestly, that is how life treats many people too.
When your process becomes too long, when results delay and when your rebuilding phase becomes visible publicly, society slowly loses patience with you. Human beings naturally associate visible success with value and prolonged struggle with incompetence, even when growth is quietly happening underneath.
That is why many people quit too early.
Not because they lack potential, but because they cannot survive the psychological weight of being doubted repeatedly while still trying to build.
But one thing Arsenal eventually did well was something many people fail to do in life: they stayed with a process long enough for it to mature.
Today, players like Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice represent more than football talent; they represent patience meeting preparation.
Because success is usually noisy at the end but painfully quiet during construction.
Nobody claps for consistency immediately.
Nobody celebrates discipline instantly.
People mostly celebrate results.
That is why many individuals become “overnight successes” after surviving years of invisible work.
Even in our everyday life:
● businesses fail before stabilizing,
● careers delay before breakthrough,
● relationships struggle before maturity,
● and dreams look unrealistic before becoming inspiring stories.
Maybe that is why Arsenal’s story resonates emotionally with many people beyond football. Deep down, many people see themselves in that journey: trying, failing, rebuilding, being doubted publicly, yet still showing up again.
And sometimes, the difference between failure and success is simply who stayed long enough.
So, to anyone currently in their rebuilding or “almost there” season, do not allow temporary struggles make you abandon a process that still has life in it.
Not every delay means denial.
Not every setback means failure.
And not every season of silence means nothing is growing.
Sometimes, your breakthrough is simply waiting for your consistency to mature.
Stay disciplined.
Stay hopeful.
Stay prepared.
And most importantly, stay long enough for your process to speak for itself.
Once again, CONGRATULATIONS ARSENAL AND ALL THE FANS AROUND THE WORLD.

And honestly, if anyone asks me today who will eventually emerge victorious as the APC flag bearer, my answer is very simple; only APC members can answer that question, and they will answer it loudly on Thursday, May 21st, 2026, through their votes and alignment.
What is certain, however, is that the contest has gradually shaped itself around three prominent names:
● Senator Saliu Mustapha
● Ambassador Yahaya Seriki
● and Bashir Omolaja Bolarinwa, whom many have already christened “the Presidential choice.”
At this point, it is left for Progressives within the party to decide who they believe should carry their flag into the next general election:
● the alleged Presidency’s preferred candidate,
● the Governor’s preferred candidate,
● or the current leading political figure from Kwara Central.
Only APC members can answer that question, and they will do so clearly in due course.
Of course, several factors may influence their decision: political structure, loyalty, accessibility, contributions to party growth, popularity, grassroots acceptance, and what each aspirant is believed to have offered Kwarans over time.
Because beyond endorsements and political alignments, elections are still ultimately about acceptance. Maybe another day, we will discuss those aspects deeply.
But until then, may the best man win and may Kwara and Kwarans ultimately be the true winners.
This is Anifowose, and this is my thought. I say what many people think.

Have fun and stay blessed.
POLITICS AND POLITICIANS: POLITICS IS TRULY A CRAZY GAME
Politics is very crazy.
Honestly, I do not even know if “crazy” is the perfect word to use here, but you may permit me because I genuinely struggle to find a better expression for the kind of situation currently unfolding in Kwara politics.
Imagine this.
For about three years, I have been eating biscuits peacefully. You, on the other hand, have been enjoying burgers for about seven years. I become interested in your burger and openly say I would like to have a taste of it too. You also decided you would love to have my biscuit, the same biscuit I have already publicly declared I am no longer interested in eating because of my interest in your burger.
Then the referee comes out to officially cleared me to contest for the biscuit I already said I do not want again. To make the matter even more interesting, scores were still eventually allocated to me, "Zero" for a contest I openly distanced myself from.
If you still do not agree with me that politics is truly a crazy game, then maybe we simply have different definitions of the word.
That analogy almost perfectly captures the current realities within the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State, particularly the interesting dynamics between the number one citizen of the state and the number one citizen of Kwara Central.
For quite some time now, there have been persistent rumours that the Governor and the Senator representing Kwara Central are not exactly on the same page politically. Of course, only the two of them and those close to them truly understand the depth or reality of whatever differences may exist. However, the open support and visible alignment with Ambassador Yahaya Seriki by the Governor have naturally strengthened public suspicions that perhaps the rumours were not entirely baseless after all.
And honestly, many people who have followed Kwara politics closely may not even be surprised by the Governor’s posture. Ambassador Yahaya Seriki has openly shown admiration, loyalty and support for the Governor on several occasions. Politics, just like life, often rewards visible loyalty and consistent alignment. It is only natural that such energy may eventually be reciprocated politically.
At the same time, one cannot completely ignore recent comments made by the Governor saying that if the decision were left entirely to him, he already knew where the governorship should go, but that he also had to consider stakeholders and broader political realities. Many political observers believe those comments may have quietly hinted at the larger calculations currently shaping the APC’s internal permutations.
And honestly, the ruling party will be paying very close attention to developments within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party structure under Senator Bukola Saraki and most of the visible governorship aspirants within the PDP camp are from Kwara Central, and interestingly, the competition there appears relatively calmer and more coordinated publicly.
Whether that calmness comes from absolute confidence in the leadership direction of Senator Bukola or simply from political maturity among the aspirants themselves is another discussion entirely. But one thing I appreciated recently was the mature tone adopted by Dan Iya when he openly cautioned supporters against treating the contest as a do-or-die affair.
Speaking of “do or die,” I cannot help but wonder what conversations may currently be happening quietly within the camps of the major APC aspirants ahead of Thursday’s primary election, particularly within the SSM camp.
Will Senator Saliu Mustapha continue maintaining the calm and peaceful disposition many of his supporters believe he has shown since becoming a Senator? Or will the intensity naturally rise as the reality of the contest draws closer? Well, Politics has a way of revealing both patience and pressure simultaneously. (1/2)
REFORMS, PAIN AND THE HOPE FOR A BETTER NIGERIA
Nigeria must genuinely become better, and personally, I remain strongly Pan-Nigerian in my convictions.
I have had several conversations with different people regarding the reforms embarked upon by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and quite frankly, those reforms have not been easy on ordinary Nigerians. That reality is clear and undeniable, and even Mr. President himself has repeatedly acknowledged this in many of his speeches.
Before 2023, one of my biggest fears was having another administration that appeared disconnected from the daily realities of Nigerians. However, whether people agree with him or not, President Tinubu has shown that he is fully aware of the happenings in the country and willing to take difficult decisions many leaders would rather avoid.
One thing difficult to take away from him is his doggedness, clarity of thought and conviction about the direction he believes Nigeria should go.
His recent outing at the Africa CEO Forum reflected this clearly. He spoke boldly and confidently about subsidy removal, exchange rate unification, stabilization of the naira and initiatives such as Nigerian Education Loan Fund. Whether one agrees fully or not, the President articulated his reasoning clearly and defended his policies intelligently.
Now, the fuel subsidy debate will likely remain one of the most controversial policy discussions in Nigeria for years. Many economists have long argued that subsidy payments were unsustainable, and in truth, there is logic behind its removal. However, like many Nigerians, one sincere question I still have for Mr. President is this: if subsidy removal was necessary, why oppose similar attempts in previous administrations? Was it politics then, or were the realities different? I genuinely hope one day he answers that question.
Overall, the President represented Nigeria well in the sessions I watched. He projected competence, awareness and ownership of his policies. To anyone watching objectively, it was obvious he is actively involved in many of the difficult decisions being made.
However, Nigerians are understandably impatient because the pain is immediate while the rewards still feel distant.
The President often compares the reform process to childbirth, painful before eventual joy. And honestly, many Nigerians are simply waiting for that moment where the sacrifices begin to reflect meaningfully in daily life through lower hardship, more opportunities and improved living conditions.
Personally, I believe many of these reforms were necessary and perhaps should have happened years ago. But reforms alone are not enough; transparency and accountability must follow them closely.
Nigerians deserve clearer explanations on how the savings from subsidy removal and increased FAAC allocations are being utilized. State governments especially must do more with the increased revenues now available to them. Citizens deserve to see tangible improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, security and economic opportunities.
In conclusion, President Tinubu appears genuinely convinced about the long-term value of his reforms. But Nigerians need more than convincing speeches, they need visible and measurable improvements in their everyday lives.
I still believe we are on a path that could eventually produce meaningful results, but the major question remains: how long must Nigerians wait before they begin to truly experience the dividends of these painful sacrifices?
I sincerely hope the answer is sooner rather than later.
May God bless Nigeria, guide our leaders toward wisdom and justice, and may Nigeria truly become great in our lifetime.
