Ultimately, this debate should not be reduced to whether Saliu Mustapha has the right to seek the governorship or whether he believes he possesses the competence to govern Kwara. He has every right to aspire. The real issue is the political philosophy underlying his current journey. Does fairness mean that an individual must be guaranteed a ticket because of a previous understanding? Does competence automatically trump zoning, equity and political accommodation? Can a political arrangement be condemned when it works against an aspirant but celebrated when it works in his favour? And should Kwara's political destiny increasingly be shaped by external political actors whose interests may not permanently align with those of the state?

Mustapha may have succeeded in explaining his political choices on Channels Television, but his explanations also exposed contradictions that deserve further examination. Kwara does not belong to any individual politician, political family, party or godfather. The state belongs to its people. Its political future should therefore be determined by a process that respects fairness, inclusion, due process and the collective interest of its citizens, rather than the personal ambition or political calculations of any individual.

His claim that Kwara has never operated any meaningful principle of political rotation also defies political history. Yes, rotation is not a constitutional provision, but Nigerian politics has never been governed exclusively by what is written in the Constitution. Political parties routinely develop arrangements based on zoning, rotation, equity and regional balancing. After Bukola Saraki completed his two terms as governor, the governorship moved to Kwara South under the political arrangement of the then ruling party. It was not a constitutional requirement; it was a political decision. That is precisely the point. Zoning is fundamentally an intra-party arrangement and cannot constitutionally bind another party, but its political significance cannot simply be wished away. It has historically been used to promote inclusiveness, manage competing interests and ensure that one section of the state does not permanently feel excluded.

Perhaps the most consequential revelation in Mustapha’s interview was his admission that he had an understanding with the governor that he would serve only one term in the Senate, after which he would receive support for the governorship. That admission introduces a significant contradiction into his present argument. The same political influence he appears to be challenging today was, according to his own account, the influence he expected to work in his favour. If political arrangements are acceptable when they favour one aspirant but become unacceptable when they favour another, then the debate ceases to be simply about fairness, equity or due process. It becomes a question of political expectation.

This also raises a broader question about entitlement. Political tickets cannot sustainably be treated as compensation packages or products of negotiated entitlement. Every politician has the right to aspire, but nobody has the right to demand a ticket. The Senate is not a birthright, and the governorship is not an automatic reward for past loyalty. If an aspirant believes he is the best candidate, the proper response is to convince the people and compete within the rules. When political arrangements fail to produce the expected outcome, defection may be a legitimate political choice, but it should not be dressed up as an inevitable consequence of a supposed violation of principles that were previously acceptable when they served one's interests.

Then comes the Wike factor. There is nothing unusual about politicians forming alliances across party lines or geographical boundaries, and Wike is undoubtedly a formidable political operator. But Kwara people must ask whether the state's political future should increasingly depend on the intervention of a political actor from Rivers State. Wike's political career has demonstrated that political agreements can become intensely contested when interests diverge, with the Rivers political crisis involving him and Governor Siminalayi Fubara providing a contemporary illustration. Political alliances are ultimately driven by interests, not sentiment. Therefore, any arrangement that places Wike at the centre of Kwara's political calculations deserves careful scrutiny. What does Kwara gain from importing a political godfather from Rivers State into the state's political affairs?
