For all the mockery mainstream conservatives aim at the left for believing in blank-slatism and thinking human nature does not exist, the irony is that the so-called Center-Right runs on a version of the very same idea, usually without noticing it.

They believe that the values you hold closest are what make you who you are, so when someone goes badly wrong, it must be those values that carried them there. Let's say a radical Communist who walks into Wall Street and opens fire, killing a few people. The instinct on the Center-Right is to put Communism in the dock. The idea itself is the culprit, since the shooter was a Communist who acted to advance the Communist cause. Push that reasoning to its endpoint and you land at the thought that if you remove Communism from the world, there's nothing left to turn this man into a Communist in the first place, which means no attack, and instead of becoming a shooter, the guy would have probably lived an average life, and probably started a family.

This is a form of blank-slatism because it treats the man as a blank surface that Communism wrote itself onto. And you assume that his real self, the one he'd have kept if the idea had never reached him, was harmless and content, and that a corrupting idea is the only reason he turned into a killer. It completley ignores the possibility that the guy probably already had murderous intents deep inside him, and that Communism was just an outlet for it. If Communism did not exist, those intents do not go away, and the guy would just find a different one.
