I really don't like the term "anti-vaxxer" for people who don't get the COVID-19 vaccine, but are otherwise vaccianted. It disregards all the hard work public health officials and pediatricians have done to get children vaccinated for several deadly diseases.
On one hand, kids need functioning organs to do well. On the other, the whole end goal of pediatrics is to set kids up for success, and that can't happen without longitudinal interventions that account for behavior.
I feel like I'm constantly being torn between my interests in the technical side of medicine and the psychosocial side. It's the part of me that is torn between critical care and outpatient.
@ArlenePQHo@WMUMedicine For those who don't know. Arlene is one of the coolest people I know. I still haven't entirely forgiven #Match2022 for stealing her from us.
Done with day 1 of Intern year. Things I've learned:
1. Residency is a LOT of work.
2. The physical exam involves watching kids play with toys. Pediatrics is probably the best specialty
3. The plan involves loving family time. Pediatrics is DEFINITELY the best specialty
@aaronecarroll What about the families who would be able to afford both? Is there harm in allowing them to pursue a drug that will at least offer a little bit of hope?
Speaking as someone who has a family member with Alzheimers, not as a newly minted doctor.
@Dr_Ruedinger @FuturePedsRes@NextGenPeds Last year the "meet and greet" sessions were best when I actually got to hear residents interact with each other. A high resident to student ratio in each room really made that easier. When there were 4 students in a room I didn't want to step on the other students' toes.
@pagepeds_zackb@FuturePedsRes We need more men in pediatrics in general! So many social biases and harmful social constructions lead to the gender discrepancy in peds!
IMHO, the application process this year needs to find a more reliable way for applicants to become familiar with programs. Maybe that could be through in-person second looks, or increased 1 on 1 resident interactions. 4/
Mixed feelings about virtual interviews returning next year. I like the lower cost barrier and that it is more equitable to socioeconomic barriers, but not everyone is comfortable with the virtual platform #PedsMatch22
I'm not just referring to applicants here either. Some residents I talked to didn't feel comfortable with the platform, and that made it even harder to gauge whether a program was a good fit for me. 2/
Congrats to @MekalaNeelakan1 for winning the Educator CLEAR Award! Working with you on a few projects this year your passion for education is incredible, and you totally deserve it. Wish you the best next year at UofM!
