Graded inequality is precisely why we must understand honour killings beyond a simple oppressor–oppressed binary.

Praveen’s murder shows how caste, class and patriarchy can intersect even within oppressed communities. Two people may belong to the same caste, yet not occupy the same social or economic position. The family’s claim to “honour” can become a weapon against the person who crosses those boundaries.

This is what Ambedkar meant by graded inequality.

Society is not divided merely into two camps. It is organised into layers, where one group may be oppressed by another while simultaneously exercising power over someone below it.

The answer cannot be to romanticise communities in the name of caste solidarity, nor to reduce every honour killing to inter-caste hatred. We have to confront the deeper structure like who controls women’s choices, who controls marriage, who controls family honour, and whose economic or social status is considered worthy of protection.

Praveen was killed because someone believed that their idea of family honour was more valuable than his right to live and love.

That is the brutality of graded inequality .

Oppression can travel downward, sideways and even within the same community.
