The 36-hour Grand Finale of “STATATHON – A Data Journey for Viksit Bharat” concluded successfully on 18thJune 2026. A total of 25 finalist teams competed across five challenge statements spanning diverse domains of official statistics, showcasing innovative solutions for data-driven governance.
In the first category, a Start-Up named Airavata Technologies from Maharashtra secured the top prize, followed by Sri Sairam Engineering College, Tamil Nadu. Bharat Institute of Engineering & Technology, Telangana and Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science, Tamil Nadu claimed the first and second prizes, respectively, in the second category.
In the third category, the Institute of Technical Education & Research (Faculty of Engineering and Technology), Odisha emerged victorious, with R.M.K. Engineering College, Tamil Nadu, as the runner-up. Bhagwan Parshuram Institute of Technology, Delhi and Chennai Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu, secured the winner and runner-up positions, respectively, in the fourth category. In the fifth category, Jai Parkash Mukand Lal Innovative Engineering and Technology Institute, Haryana won the first prize, while Kongu Engineering College and Matrix Labs, a start-up, both from Tamil Nadu, jointly finished as runner-up.
Through initiatives like STATATHON, MoSPI continues to foster innovation and nurture the next generation of data-driven problem solvers.

The 36-hours Grand Finale of #STATATHON 2025 – A Data Journey for Viksit Bharat commenced yesterday for 5 use cases in the field of official statistics. The STATATHON was inaugurated by Shri Rohit Bhardwaj, Additional Director General, MoSPI, in the presence of Adviser, AICTE, Vice-Chancellor and the Managing Director of MRIIRS. From 5000+ teams, 25 teams (21 academic institutions and 4 start-ups) have been finalized, after rigorous evaluation and expert mentoring, that have advanced to the 36-hours Grand Finale of STATATHON, for providing innovative solutions to key statistical challenges. The dignitaries set the context of the event by briefing the finalist teams about the expectations as they embark on this exciting journey of innovation, leveraging data, AI, and emerging technologies.

Coding was always the easiest part of the job, and AI has taken over much of it now.

The tough part still stays with the human mind:

- Designing the system end-to-end (tradeoffs, constraints, scale)
- Breaking vague requirements into clear specs
- Choosing the right abstractions, data models, and boundaries
- Thinking through edge cases before users find them
- Making it reliable: failures, retries, idempotency, fallbacks
- Security + privacy by default
- Observability: logs, metrics, tracing, alerts, SLOs
- Performance + cost: what matters at P95/P99, what’s waste
- End: “it works” isn’t the finish line

Engineers build systems. You may have an argument, if you write a detailed prompt covering all of it, AI will be able to do it. As I said, coding is the easier part of the job once you know what you up-to.
