I just graduated a few weeks ago. I was class rep all through my stay in UI Law so I knew nearly all my classmates on a personal note.

The ones who worked every last day just to feed and afford the basics.

The ones we had to crowdfund for.

The ones who were in and out of hospital and always called to take excuse because while we’re writing yet another test, they can’t make it because they are on a hospital bed for the umpteenth time that semester.

The ones who got overwhelmed and depressed.

The ones who lost family and/or friends and just couldn’t find their way back.

The family men and women who just had other responsibilities and cant give it as much time as the others.

And it goes on and on…

The most important thing I learnt from being class rep is not leadership or service. It is to give people grace when it comes to these things.

There are still those who do not care and just want to graduate with whatever but mehn, more than half the time, life happened and it takes different forms.

Leave people alone. Let them celebrate their 2:2 if they want. YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT IT TOOK TO GET THERE!

And I really hope you never have to know.

A defendant allegedly defrauded a cooperative society of a State Judiciary, which had the State Chief Judge, most Judges of the State Judiciary, and almost all the Magistrates as members. CJ wrote Petition to the DSS and he was arrested and arraigned at the Magistrates Court.

He filed a bail application before the Magistrates Court and same was denied. He brought another application before the High Court and when said application came up for hearing today, the trial Judge told his counsel that “Mr XYZ, I cannot hear your application, I am victim too.” The counsel tried to psych up the Judge that he has confidence in the court bla bla bla, but the Judge was having none of it. The back and forth went on for quite a while but the Judge didn’t budge.

The Judge then turned to me and asked “Mr Adeyemi, do you think I should hear this matter?” Thank God for my basic knowledge of history. I replied;

“My Lord, this matter draws parallels with that happened to Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s bail application which suffered non-hearing at the Supreme Court till he (Abiola) died. A few years before Abiola was arrested and detained, his Newspaper (Concorde) had published a sensational news - ‘The Supreme Court scandals’, - where the paper had alleged that the Justices took bribes of Benz V-Boot cars from President Babangida. In the wake of the publication, almost all the Supreme Court Justices sued Concorde Newspapers in the Lagos High Court for libel.

Fast forward a few years, MKO Abiola (the proprietor of the Newspaper)’s bail application travelled through the judicial ladder and came up before the Supreme Court, and the justices who sued recused themselves, citing perception of possible bias. The remaining Justices were however not up to the minimum quorum of 5 Justices. Therefore, the matter could not be heard.

My Lord, Abacha (the new Head of State at the time), seeing an opportunity to profit from the impasse, refused to appoint new Justices to change the composition of the court, he rather increased the retirement age that was also 65 years for appellate Court Judges then, to 70 years. That’s how Abiola’s application was never heard till he died. I sympathize with Barr. XYZ in this case who is known to me, but I can see that My Lord is not disposed to hear it. Luckily, the High Court is constituted duly by a single Judge, so I hope he gets at least a Judge who is not a member of the cooperative to hear this application.”

The Judge responded that I have enriched his background knowledge and he is now fortified in not hearing it.

The lesson here is - steer clear of Judges cooperatives 😂.
