Very pleased to be leading major new project for @HistoricEngland@HE_Maritime funded by @TheCrownEstate to mobilise marine heritage data from development-led archaeology in push to net zero: https://t.co/CTSZpuuQBR
@bodine_cs @magic_walnut Fantastic work Cameron! An interesting comparison of EGN ML accuracy was aired recently on a shipwreck survey in Thunder Bay. Univ. of Michigan found that applying TVG had a large impact on ML performance for segmenting wrecks and debris, suggesting a need to investigate further.
If you are interested in mapping benthic substrates w/ sonar, check out my recent paper! Co-Authored with @magic_walnut and Toby Hocking!

Kelp displaying nicely using high frequency sidescan in a georeferenced waterfall view.
A squeaky transect at times, but thankfully everything survived!๐ฌ
@chris_harrod Not as yet Chris, I think 800kHz could be useful at highwater for mapping a > range at higher altitude. I've used high frequency here as I've had success previously detecting stipe shadows inferring density, but height only measurable at nadir/down-image in such ground.
Finally, with reasonable viz I managed to put the towed camera over what I thought was a long-lost anchor, mapped by chance with the sidescan last summer. Initial suspicions confirmed, so now to obtain physical dimensions on the ground with the kind help of local divers.โ๏ธ๐
Lucky frame from my first elasmobranch on the towed camera - as I almost missed it! Thornback (Raja clavata) by the looks, at rest and demonstrating super camouflage among the stones and gravel. ๐ง๐ฆ
@chris_harrod Yep, totally agree. I've only seen it while shore fishing for sharks in Western Australia. A feeling of insignificance as a star was found wherever my eye fell, quite stirring to say the least. Big sharks too in those days, only adding to the atmosphere - I recall the shivers!
My 7th year of @Scillypelagics & itโs not often Iโve been left speechless. For several minutes this evening most of the boat stood in silence as 100+ bluefin tuna formed a frenzying vortex alongside us. The hordes of rare & scarce seabirds asideโฆ this was special!! ๐๐๐
