This historic photograph shows three legendary battleships of the Royal Navy—HMS Rodney, HMS Nelson, and HMS Revenge—being dismantled at the Thos W. Ward shipyard in Inverkeithing, Scotland, circa 1948.📷📷

After serving and playing a vital role during World War II, these iconic ships were eventually cut up for scrap. This sad sight marked the end of an era for some of the most famous warships in the history of the Royal Navy, now remembered only through photographs and historical archives.

【死んで神鷲となるより、生きて何度も爆撃せよ」――9回特攻し、9回とも「九九双軽」と生還した不屈の天才、佐々木友次伍長】

特攻という名の絶対死を拒絶し、己の操縦技術と信念だけで生き抜いた陸軍航空兵の伝説。
彼が駆った愛機こそ、川崎航空機が誇る名機「九九式双発軽爆撃機（九九双軽）」でした。

当時、すでに旧式化しつつあった九九双軽ですが、実はマニア好みの超優秀な機体。

ハインケルの血統を受け継ぐ美しい楕円翼を持ち、双発機とは思えない驚異的な旋回性能と、急降下爆撃に耐える強靭な機体強度を誇っていました。

特攻用に機首へ起爆用の「突出し竿」を付けられ、過積載の800kg爆弾を抱かされた九九双軽。しかし、急降下爆撃の達人だった佐々木伍長は、この機体のポテンシャルを極限まで引き出します。

敵艦に突入すると見せかけ、神業のような急降下から超低空へ。

猛烈な対空砲火と米軍のグラマンをヒラリとかわし、標的に爆弾を必中させて離脱。

そして何より熱いのが、特攻用に「一度セットしたら落とせない」はずの爆弾を、現地の整備兵たちが佐々木伍長のために「手動で切り離せる隠しワイヤー」へ密かに改造していたという絆の逸話です。

「大本営発表で2度殺され」「上層部から帰ってきたら射殺すると脅され」ながらも、航空機の本質は「爆弾を落として帰ってくること」だと証明し続けた佐々木伍長と九九双軽。

佐々木伍長は第4航空軍の参謀・岩本徹三（または飛行戦隊長の岩橋譲少佐ら技術重視の指揮官）から「航空兵を消耗品のように扱う特攻は間違いだ。何度も行って爆撃せよ」と告げられていました。

視界不良や敵艦不在でもそのまま海に突入せず、佐々木伍長は「見えない敵に体当たりしても意味がない」と冷静に判断し、帰投し激しく叱責を受けます。余程メンタルが強く無いと出来ないことです。

兵器を、そして人間の命を「消耗品」とした狂気の中で、技術と合理性、そして職人たちの絆で戦い抜いた、ミリタリー史上屈指のカウンターカルチャーです。

ツィタデレ作戦とは、第二次世界大戦中の1943年7月5日から8月初めにかけて行われた、ドイツ軍とソ連軍によるクルスクの戦いのドイツ側作戦名です。
両軍合わせて6,000両以上の戦車が激突した、史上最大の戦車戦として知られています。

この戦い以降、ドイツ軍は戦略的なイニシアチブ（主導権）を完全に失い、ソ連軍が常に攻勢に回る形勢逆転の決定的な転換点となりました。

The Ju 87 G "Kanonenvogel" turned an obsolete, sluggish dive bomber into one of the most lethal anti-tank weapons of World War II. Introduced on the Eastern Front in early 1943, this variant abandoned dive-bombing to counter overwhelming waves of Soviet armor. Engineers stripped the Stuka of its dive brakes and added two underwing 37 mm BK 3,7 autocannons firing tungsten-cored ammunition. The initial G-1 variant used converted D-3 airframes, while the definitive G-2 model featured an extended wingspan to help lift the heavy weaponry.

Operating the Kanonenvogel required exceptional skill because the massive gun pods crippled the aircraft's speed and maneuverability, leaving it highly vulnerable to ground fire and enemy fighters. Each cannon held just 12 rounds, forcing pilots to make precise, low-altitude passes targeting the thin rear and top armor of Soviet T-34 tanks. Despite these severe flight deficits and a tiny 24-round total payload, elite aces like Hans-Ulrich Rudel utilized the aircraft to claim hundreds of armor kills.
