She always said relational activism is about the people,
and she was a very special person who exemplified this: Faye Hamilton.
You can see in these photos how vivid and charismatic she was, a luminous character.
We met Faye after she became ill with leukemia. She instinctively knew that while professionals can guide and help or provide short-term scaffolding, it's the community, family, and friends where real support is found. Faye needed support with her leukemia and help looking after her daughter. She had a family group conference and assembled a circle of friends from her community to support her through the illness.
Faye was so enthusiastic about family group conferencing that she joined our family advisory board and became a fixture in our work.
She helped us with our relational activism projects both inside and outside of London. Faye was a wonderful person and a leader for change. She connected with other people, and everyone knew her in the community. She was a conduit for the good things and an ambassador for the community.
Faye was a singer. She sang at many events and spoke passionately about lived experience and the power of advocacy to change the system. She was a key influence on Camden's social work practice and on people far and wide.
Faye often said, "Good help should be like a hammock, supporting, raising you up."
She also said, "The world is like an onion, and people too.” She helped peel back the layers to reach the tender parts. To connect with us fallible, passionate professionals. Faye had a profound understanding of the relationship between social workers and parents, describing it as a revolving door with fear on both sides. Through her vision and force of personality she helped to humanise, to pave the way for parents be seen as partners and her lived experiences as an asset.
Very sadly, Faye passed away over the weekend after living so lively & large scale for a longtime with the illness. Faye, it won't be the same without you arriving in the reception at Kings Cross talking to the whole world down there in one of your bespoke ensembles—a different one every time, Jamaican flag earrings, tracksuits, and the spirit that transcends …
We love you, Faye. We miss you.
All power to Faye

Come along! I’m going to try to summarise the book in 30 minutes without PP (which feels like high wire without the safety net) and then answer questions about the profound ways a focus on rights changes social work - practice, research and leadership
Great to speak to @AmandaTatts about relational public services and a more hopeful model for local authorities taking inspiration from brilliant @CamdenCouncil colleagues. Thanks to @mds49 and @UCLPolicyLab for matchmaking and finding new audiences this way of working
