Then, in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, he secured 32.79% of the vote in Coimbatore, finished second with 4.5 lakh votes, lost by only 8.6 percentage points.

In both the elections he pushed the traditional Dravidian powerhouse AIADMK to third place.

Politics is not a running race in the Olympics where the only thing that matters is who crosses the finish line first.

Vilifying the State? Seriously?
I am proud to say that I have personally stood up for my Tamil people, including through a 13-day hunger strike. So I really don’t understand why some people are trying to divert the discussion when a genuine concern about my mother tongue, Telugu, is being raised.
You know what? I am lucky to have been born Telugu, in the Tamil State, and raised as a Tamil ponnu. ❤️
For me, my mother tongue Telugu is equally important as my motherland Tamil Nadu.
Loving and speaking about my mother tongue does not mean I love Tamil Nadu any less. Both are part of who I am.

The borrowings or tender spending are comparatively lower? Since when???

Leave it. Even if they are, the cost of a foreign trip by the CM cannot become irrelevant. And yes, #Annamalai Anna is also saying the same, it’s a new government, with first-time MLAs, and hence the government should be open to learning from its mistakes.
In fact, what he said today was about why the government should identify, engage with, facilitate and expand the existing businesses in Tamil Nadu, rather than focusing so heavily on hunting for investors abroad.

Let’s understand the simple yet effective point @annamalai_k avargal makes in this 70 seconds video.

The UK’s projected GDP growth for 2026 is around 1%, while India’s is around 6.4%.

At the same time, Indian companies like Tata, Jaguar Land Rover and Mahindra have made substantial investments in the UK. In fact, the UK government says Indian companies invested more than £1 billion in the UK through deals announced in 2025, creating thousands of jobs.

So, #Annamalai anna’s question is very simple:

Instead of travelling all the way to the UK looking for investment, why not first look at the businesses we already have here?

Come to Coimbatore. Come to Madurai. Meet our exporters, manufacturers and industrialists.

Identify businesses that already have markets, technology and export potential and help them expand their production facilities, increase capacity and create more jobs here in Tamil Nadu.

And even if investment comes from a company operating in the UK, #Annamalai anna’s point is that it could simply be an Indian company with operations or a branch in the UK, rather than a UK-based company bringing fresh capital into Tamil Nadu.

That is the distinction he is asking us and @CMOTamilnadu to look at.

The figure of 3,454 Telugu schools in the 1822–25 Madras Presidency survey is genuine. The data comes from the Collectors survey of indigenous education, later compiled and published by Dharampal and reproduced by the Centre for Indic Studies.

But those 3,454 schools cannot be described as schools in present-day Tamil Nadu. The Telugu-speaking region covered Vishakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Machilipatnam, Guntur, Nellore and Cuddapah, the territories that subsequently became part of Andhra Pradesh after 1953.

This does not mean Telugu education was absent from the Tamil-speaking areas of the old Presidency. The same 1822–25 records show 201 Telugu schools in North Arcot, broadly corresponding today to parts of Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet and Tirupattur. Telugu schools also existed in Chengalpattu, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Salem and Coimbatore.

Further, Madras High Court records show that Telugu-medium education continued in Tamil Nadu after Independence.

N. Malli v. Government of Tamil Nadu (2019): the Government’s own counter-affidavit recorded 24 pure Telugu schools and 11 bilingual schools in Pallipattu Panchayat Union, Tiruvallur District.

G.K. Mallikarjuna Rao v. Chief Educational Officer (2022): the proceedings concerned a Headmaster post in a Telugu-medium school in Tiruvallur district.

N. Umapathy v. Government of Tamil Nadu (2023): the Court dealt with teachers working in Telugu and bilingual schools in the Pallipattu area.

T. Vijaya Prathip v. Director of Elementary Education (2024): the Court dealt with a school in Nazarethpuram, Chennai, recognised in the proceedings as a Telugu linguistic-minority institution.

D. John Sankar v. Director of Elementary Education (2026): the Government told the High Court that Anniyalam Panchayat Union Middle School, Krishnagiri, began in 1956 as a purely Telugu-medium school, with Classes VI–VIII continuing in Telugu medium.

Article 350-A also recognises the responsibility to provide adequate facilities for instruction in the mother tongue at the primary stage for children belonging to linguistic minorities.

But there is an important distinction between legal provision and ground reality.

The existence of a Telugu-medium school on paper does not by itself establish that it had adequate classrooms, infrastructure, textbooks, Telugu teaching materials, qualified teachers, sufficient student strength or effective mother-tongue instruction.

Likewise, the existence of Government orders protecting or permitting Telugu education does not establish how effectively those safeguards were implemented in every district or village.

So the factual question remains: how many Telugu-medium schools actually functioned over the decades, how many became bilingual or changed medium, how many closed, and for what reasons?

When India is growing at 6.4% while the UK is at around 1%, his question is: why is the Tamil Nadu government going all the way to the UK to hunt for investment instead of aggressively scaling up the investment potential we already have here?

It was a UK Government-funded fellowship, not a trip funded by TN taxpayers.

Whether the UK offered Jaguar for investment or Jaguar sought investment in the UK doesn’t matter here. It is still an example of the India-to-UK investment flow @annamalai_k anna is talking about.
And nobody is saying that 1% growth is “bad” for a developed economy. That’s not the point.
The simple fact is that the IMF currently projects 1% growth for the UK versus 6.4% for India in 2026.

Interesting point. However, of the ₹15,300 cr in investment commitments announced during the UK visit, the biggest ₹11,000 cr commitment is from Indian-headquartered Samvardhana Motherson International. EY’s ₹1,000 cr commitment also comes from a company that already has a Global Capability Centre in Chennai, while Sweden’s Sigma Technology Group is expanding its existing Indian operations. The European auto-component proposal is only a Letter of Intent.
So, the clearest new UK based investment is only the Wilson Power Solutions ₹300 cr commitment. The rest looks more like political diversion than a clear case of investment.

I’m not sure whether you’re genuinely confused or deliberately trying to confuse others.
