Today I met Lindiwe Zulu, who was President Jacob Zuma’s point person on Zimbabwe. She was so direct and tough with all GNU parties that Robert Mugabe lost his cool and insulted her for refusing to fold after his rants.

I asked her whether South Africa and President Zuma had advised Zimbabwe’s opposition not to participate in the 2013 election. Her answer was unequivocal — she said YES, they did.

She added that she told them to only participate once the conditions that had led to the Unity Government had been met.
