Southampton, New York - May 10, 2026 - Southampton Town Police Department officers fatally shot 28-year-old Steven Eastwood shortly before 3 p.m. on May 10 after responding to a reported domestic violence incident at aresidence in the Northampton section of Southampton, New York.
Officers arrived and encountered Eastwood st* bbing his mother with a knife inside the home. Officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, he did not comply. Two officers then fired their service weapons, striking Eastwood. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police recovered several knives from the residence.
The incident began after multiple 911 calls from Eastwood's mother, who reported that her son was intoxicated, acting violently, and armed with a knife.
Police stated that Eastwood briefly moved away from the victim before returning and resuming the attack despite officers' commands. His mother suffered multiple st*b and sl*sh wounds and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for emergency treatment. She survived the attack.
Authorities said Southampton Town Police had responded to numerous domestic-related incidents at the residence over approximately the past decade.
Police also stated that Eastwood's mother had previously obtained an order of protection against him, but it was no longer active at the time of the incident.
