New research in #JAERE evaluates a 2001 Pennsylvania ⛏️ coal mining reform.
They find it increased the probability of a median mine shutting down by 14–15%.

But not all mines responded equally — exit was driven by mines with prior violations. The policy screened out the worst polluters first. ☑️
One catch: mines stopped producing faster, but didn't clean up any sooner. Exit and cleanup are two different problems. ⚠️

New #JAERE research shows that moderate-or-worse droughts reduce nighttime luminosity by ~2%, suggesting ~0.6% GDP decline, yet the right water infrastructure can offset the damage. 💪
