THE TENTH SHADOW
The staff gave them only one warning before filming began.
โIf someone calls your name from behind, donโt turn around.โ
The members laughed.
It sounded like another trick designed to make them nervous before entering the deserted folk village. Hidden speakers, costumed actors, doors controlled from somewhere off-cameraโeverything had been prepared to frighten them.
JL laughed with the others, although his eyes remained fixed on the woman who had given the warning.
She was old, dressed in a faded gray hanbok, and stood beside the entrance as if she belonged to the village instead of the production crew.
โWhat happens if we turn around?โ JL asked in careful Korean.
The woman looked directly at him.
โIt learns your face.โ
Before JL could ask what she meant, a staff member stepped between them.
โOkay! Cameras are rolling!โ
When JL looked again, the woman was gone.
The first few minutes were more funny than frightening.
Someone screamed when a โcorpseโ moved beneath a straw mat. Another member nearly abandoned the mission after a ghost dropped from the ceiling. Even JL, who tried to remain calm, jumped when a pale hand suddenly reached through a paper door.
The cameras followed every frightened expression.
The staff laughed behind the monitors.
Everything was going exactly as planned.
Until JL heard someone whisper from inside an empty house.
โJL.โ
He stopped.
The others continued walking, unaware that he was no longer behind them.
โJLโฆโ
It sounded like a young woman.
Her voice came through the torn paper window to his right. There was no light insideโonly darkness deeper than the shadows surrounding the house.
JL remembered the warning.
If someone calls your name from behind, donโt turn around.
But the voice wasnโt behind him.
It was beside him.
That meant it should be safe.
Right?
โWhoโs there?โ he asked.
The whisper stopped.
A moment later, something knocked three times from inside the house.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
JL stepped closer.
Through the hole in the paper window, he saw a room illuminated by a single candle. A woman sat before an old mirror, combing her long black hair. Her white hanbok was soaked with something dark around the collar.
JL exhaled in relief.
An actress.
Of course.
โYou scared me,โ he said, smiling.
The woman stopped combing.
In the mirror, JL could see her face.
She had no eyes.
Only two black holes dripping down her cheeks.
JL stumbled backward.
The candle went out.
Then someone grabbed his shoulder.
He spun around with a cry.
โWhy did you stop?โ
It was one of the members. The others stood several meters ahead, laughing at his reaction.
JL pressed a hand against his chest. โThere was someone inside.โ
They looked through the window.
The room was empty.
No candle.
No mirror.
No woman.
Only dust covering a floor that appeared untouched for years.
โShe must have gone through another door,โ someone suggested.
But there was no other door.
They resumed the mission.
JL tried to dismiss what he had seen. Perhaps the production team had constructed a hidden passage. Perhaps the darkness had made the womanโs makeup look worse than it was.
Yet something had changed.
Whenever JL passed one of the cameras, its red recording light blinked off.
Whenever he spoke, static crackled through his microphone.
And wherever he walked, another set of footsteps followed his own.
One step behind.
Always one step behind.
JL quickened his pace.
The footsteps quickened too.
He stopped.
They stopped.
He glanced at the members ahead and silently counted them.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Six.
Seven.
Eight.
Including himself, all nine were there.
So whose shadow was moving between them?
