Our website’s hero section is a 700-line, time-invariant fragment shader rendering in WebGL at runtime. The client-side GPU was recomputing 2.9 million pixels on-the-fly.

This is why we rearchitected the hero section to move the render to build time. We run the same shader in headless Chrome, save the output as a lossless WebP, and ship that to the client instead.

On an Intel N100-class desktop:

- Before: The runtime-rendered WebGL scene had a first paint time of 14.6s, 12.4s of which is a single drawArrays call rasterizing in software
- After: The pre-rendered image only takes 515ms

This is a ~28x performance improvement on lower-end desktops. My M2 Pro MacBook had a ~1.8x first paint improvement.

TL;DR always test your software on a low-end device...this performance problem had been around for months before I even knew the problem existed.

I designed this launch video with Grok 4.6 and Fable 5 on Cursor Cloud Agents.

Grok Bot kicked off the project based upon my hand-wavy ramblings & handed it to a Cursor Cloud Agent. Fable 5 brought us from an empty codebase and created the entire rendering pipeline and initial concept. Grok 4.6 took the initial concept and iteratively refined it. Finally, Grok 4.6 used ElevenLabs Music v2 to add the soundtrack.

Overall very impressed how far it got. Agent collaboration is so powerful
