The Iranian Passenger Jet That the United States Shot Down, Killing 66 Children! On July 3, 1988, the United States shot down an Iranian civilian airliner, Iran Air Flight 655, over the Persian Gulf, killing all 290 people on board, including 66 children. The aircraft, was flying a routine route from Bandar Abbas to Dubai when the U.S. Navy cruiser USS Vincennes (CG-49) fired two surface-to-air missiles at it.

And President Ronald Reagan clearly said he would not apologize for the incident. This tragedy remains one of the deadliest shootdowns of a civilian aircraft in history.

More recently, during the ongoing U.S.–Israel strikes on Iran, a girls’ school in Minab was hit, reportedly killing more than 160 students.

So it’s no surprise that many in the West question why Iran often says “Death to America.” When you kill the children of a nation, what do you expect them to do, give you flowers?
