Mansfield lost 2-1 to Arsenal today. And honestly, that is fine. The scoreline was never really the point.
Let me tell you what actually happened at Field Mill today, because I am sure you would want to know.
Nigel Clough, son of the great Brian Clough(if you know him), walked out as Mansfield manager to face Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth round.
His father was one of the greatest managers English football has ever produced, he won two league titles, two European Cups over his coaching career.
But the one thing Brian Clough never won in his entire career was the FA Cup. The closest he got was the 1991 final, where Forest lost to Tottenham, with Nigel himself playing in the attack.
The last FA Cup match Brian Clough ever managed before he retired was against Arsenal in February 1993. Forest lost 2-0. Nigel played that day too.
Today, 32 years later, his son stood in the same competition against the same opponent, this time as the manager. The full circle was not lost on anyone who knew the history.
And Mansfield made Arsenal work for it. A League One side sitting 16th in their division, 54 places away from Arsenal, winless in nine league games, gave one of the best teams in Europe a proper game at Field Mill.
They had already beaten Sheffield United 4-3 at Bramall Lane and knocked out Premier League Burnley to get here. They belong on that stage...not because of anything but because of the magic of the FA Cup.
They lost 2-1. But any Mansfield fan under 60 saw their club in the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in their lifetime today. That is football heritage.
The FA Cup did not deliver the upset today. But it delivered something just as valuable. It delivered a story that I am sure will be told at Field Mill for a very long time.
That is what this competition does. Every single time.
And Mansfield would not have had the chance without the FA Cup.
