FIFA windfall awaits Sundowns and Pirates at World Cup
Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates are set for a massive financial boost from FIFA thanks to their strong representation in the Bafana Bafana squad for the FIFA World Cup.
The two Betway Premiership giants each have eight players in Hugo Broos' final squad, meaning they are guaranteed to receive a sizeable payout through FIFA's Club Benefits Programme.
FIFA compensates clubs for releasing players to international tournaments, paying around R179,000 per player per day during the World Cup period.
With every participating nation guaranteed a minimum stay of 22 days even if they are eliminated in the group stages both Sundowns and Pirates are each set to pocket well over R30 million.
The payout could increase even further should Bafana Bafana progress into the knockout stages, as clubs continue receiving compensation for every additional day their players remain at the tournament.
It is another major financial reward for both clubs after memorable campaigns this season.
Sundowns guided by Miguel Cardoso conquered Africa by winning their second CAF Champions League title. Pirates ended their long wait for league glory by clinching the Betway Premiership crown under Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Beyond the prestige of having several stars representing South Africa on the biggest stage in world football, the FIFA money will also provide a valuable financial injection ahead of another demanding campaign next season.
