This Sacramento “compromise” is out of step with majority of Californians.
New statewide poll by @Afford_FastCA last week found 69% of Californians support extending eviction moratorium til next yr or when pandemic ends + 63% support tenants only paying “some to no past rent”
Today Governor announced weaker CA eviction moratorium “compromise” for tenants who pay 25% of their rent to June 30 + $2.6B in federal funds for renter debt relief.
However, bill allows landlords to *reject* fed relief + force tenants to fully pay rent debt when moratorium ends
Studies show at least 433,700 Americans were infected + 10,700 died from #COVID19 due to eviction last yr. This is UNACCEPTABLE
MLK stated, “The time has come for America to face the inevitable choice between materialism + humanism.” Let’s pick humanity + lives over profits. 2/2
CA’s Eviction Moratorium is expiring on Jan 31. We have less than 15 days to organize + fight for millions of Californians who are behind on rent + at risk of eviction, in order to SAVE LIVES.
Contact your state rep + Gov Newsom to vote yes on #AB15. 1/2 https://t.co/8JYy9A3DZX
Gov @GavinNewsom announces strong support to extend statewide eviction moratorium, set to sunset on Jan 31, and speedy distribution of $2.6M federal renters relief funding.
Message your CA legislator to pass #AB15 before 1/31!

The media told us that the November election was a defeat for the progressive movement in California.
Here's why they’re wrong:

It’s good to have a walking partner. And we doorknock for #womenwhorun
Rebecca Kaplan 4 Oakland City Council (just endorsed by @BernieSanders!)
Myrna Melgar 4 SAn Francisco Supervisor
Yes they’re the most qualified. They’re also progressive, values driven + committed to serving
While not a permanent solution, expanding creative programs like safe villages as proposed by @RafaelMandelman + @SandraLeeFewer address reality that our neighbors- many children + seniors, are sleeping on streets tonight
Sweeps + bans don’t solve crisis.

There is not a single US county a min wage worker can afford to rent 2 BR for their family.
Polls show most voters in California cities don’t want to simply ban tents or sweep crisis away. They want creative, permanent solutions.

As lawmakers claim #BlackLivesMatter , Oakland Mayor + City Council basically ban homelessness in city where 70% of unhoused are Black.
This issue is complex + no one wants moms, children or seniors to sleep on our streets.
But outlawing homelessness w/o alternative is inhumane
Homelessness is literally banned in Oakland, CA. This is not only a failure of government and our economic system, but a deep failure of our humanity. #oakmtg
RHNA isn’t enough.
Re-zoning for market housing isn’t anywhere near enough – “trickle-down” is a fantasy.
Only massive investment by the state and federal government can possibly meet the basic need and human right for decent and affordable housing.
Reps from East Palo Alto and Oakland are going *off* at ABAG right now on Marin and other wealthy suburbs trying to weasel out of new housing goals by shifting them to low-income communities and I am so here for it

Breaking: NJ governor and lawmakers reach a deal on a “millionaires tax” to address the fiscal crisis caused by the pandemic.
