Strengthening media partnerships for Africa’s health.
Africa CDC and the Government of Ethiopia, co-hosts of #CPHIA2026, brought media together at Africa CDC HQ with the Ministry of Health and Government Communication Service to strengthen public awareness and participation.
After Kenya confirmed an imported Ebola case, Dr Wessam Mankoula, Director of Emergency and a team from the Africa CDC travelled to Kenya to support the national response alongside WHO and other partners. During his intervention at the #WorldHealthSummit in Berlin, he explains why he joined the field response instead of the meeting in person.

Taking stock, together.
At our Q3 Review, teams from across Africa CDC came together to measure progress, confront gaps and sharpen our priorities for the final stretch of the year.
Every voice in the room shapes the work ahead. One team. One vision. A continent that is health secure and sovereign.

On @trtworld today, I spoke about Ebola funding for DRC. More than $700 million given to implementing partners has not been declared to the government.
Doctors still lack protective equipment, and health centres lack medicines.
Accountability has to be shared. Donors and partners now have the chance to show the same transparency they ask of Africa.

In 2018, Africa had about 4.3 million health workers. By 2024, that number reached 5.72 million.
That is about 700,000 more nurses, doctors, midwives and other health workers in six years.
Community health workers alone now number around 1.06 million. For many families in rural areas, they are the first, and often the only, link to care.
But these numbers represent less than 50% of the health workforce Africa needs to meet Universal Health Coverage targets by 2030.
The shortage is easing, but slowly. It has gone from 6.1 million to 5.85 million.
We are moving in the right direction, but not fast enough. Africa must train, recognize, regulate, remunerate and empower its health workers faster and at a far larger scale.

On RTNC, I spoke about the progress of the Congolese government's response and the tracking of funds mobilised.
We know what partners have committed and what they have disbursed. The government will now follow up closely with each of them, so every dollar reaches the frontline.
When communities lead, resistance falls away. Movements are reported and contacts identified earlier.
Trust is built with communities, and through transparency.

Exchanging with the Congolese press in #Kinshasa.
On Top Congo, I answered journalists' questions on how the #EbolaResponse is funded.
I explained how the money flows. Donors report what they send, implementing partners account for how it is used, and the government leads the response.
Transparency and accountability are essential to building trust.

Africa’s health security depends on a skilled public health workforce. But training alone is not enough. The skills people gain must also be recognised.
With Africa facing a projected shortage of 5.85 million health workers, Africa CDC is introducing a new accreditation framework to improve the quality of public health training and ensure that learning is recognised.
Developed with the Association of Schools of Public Health in Africa (ASPHA), the framework will help ensure that training builds the right skills and delivers real results.
Investing in training matters. Making sure it counts matters even more.

Airport screening is only the first layer. Some travellers have no symptoms when they arrive, and Ebola symptoms can appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure.
Dr. Wessam Mankoula of @AfricaCDC sets out the next layers:
Community surveillance: anyone who develops symptoms after travel, or after contact with a case or death, should report quickly
Laboratory capacity: Africa CDC is supplying test kits to Kenya and other affected and at-risk countries, and trained health workers in biosafety and biosecurity before the outbreak
Continental cooperation: on day one, Africa CDC brought together the Ministries of Health of Kenya, DRC, and Uganda to share information.
Strong national capacity plus regional coordination is how we stop this virus.

Outbreaks don't announce themselves!
They start as a cough that won't clear, or a few sick neighbours whom nobody connects.
The first to notice is usually a Community Health Worker who knows every household on her route.
Her quick report can buy valuable time—days, even weeks. That is the difference between a contained cluster and a national emergency.
Africa needs 2 million of them by 2030: trained, paid, equipped, and supported by a responsive system.
That is the agenda in Abuja, 28–30 October 2026, at the High-Level Forum on a Fit-for-Purpose Health Workforce: Accelerating the Commitment to 2 million Community Health Workers by 2030, hosted by H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and AU Champion for Human Resources for Health and the Community Health Delivery Partnership.
Health security doesn't start at the border.
It starts at the doorstep.
