I've been seeing comments on TikTok and Facebook saying that South Africa needs more schools. What concerns me is how often these views are mocked, dismissed, or argued against rather than supported.

Education is not entirely about learning to read , write or earning qualifications. School plays a vital role in personal development, social interaction, critical thinking, and learning how to function responsibly in society. It is an important stage of growth, just like navigating adolescence and developing life skills.

What is particularly striking is that I rarely see educators, professionals, diplomats, or degree holders opposing the need for more schools. Instead, criticism of this idea often comes from people who seem to underestimate the broader value of education.

As discussions continue around the actions planned for 30 June, I believe we should focus on encouraging learning, opportunity, and progress rather than dismissing the importance of education. A stronger education system benefits everyone.
