A joint intelligence operation by JMPD’s Tactical Response Unit, CCTV Crime Analysis Team, and other units led to a raid on a hijacked house in Houghton that was being used as a drug packaging and distribution hub. Officers seized large amounts of codeine-containing cough syrup and about R2 million worth of processed dagga, which had been prepared for transport to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe via informal cross-border couriers known as “Malayisha.”
Eight suspects were arrested for drug dealing and occupying a hijacked property. MMC for Public Safety Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku praised the operation, saying the city will not tolerate criminal syndicates. The JMPD encourages the public to report hijacked properties or drug activity on 011 758 9650.
